Troubleshoot DUALSHOCK 2 analog controller not responding

Find out what to do if the DualShock 2 analog controller is not responding.

How do check if my DUALSHOCK 2 is broken?

  1. Make sure the controller is connected to the system.
  2. Make sure you are using an officially licensed DUALSHOCK 2 analog controller by looking for the official PlayStation logo.  Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe, (SIEE) cannot guarantee the quality of unlicensed peripherals1.
  3. Static electricity and other factors may affect the operation of peripherals, such as controllers.  Turn off the main (rear) power switch and then turn it back on.
  4. If possible, test the controller2 on another PlayStation 2 system.
  • If the controller does not function properly, it might need to be replaced.
  • If the controller does function properly, the PlayStation 2 system may be the problem.

What do I do if the DUALSHOCK 2 controller isn’t vibrating?

  1. Check the packaging of the PlayStation 2 format software to confirm that it contains the vibration function icon.  If the package does not display the icon, the vibration function will not work with that software title.
  2. If the package does display the vibration function icon, verify that the vibration function has been enabled within the game options.  If the vibration function has not been enabled, turn it ON, and save your settings.

Make sure the analog mode is enabled.  Press the analog button on the controller to toggle between digital and analog modes.

1 Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe (SIEE) recommends only using products that are endorsed and licensed for use with PlayStation products. This means that the product has been approved and officially licensed by SIEE so as to not to damage your console or void your warranty. If the product that you are using is neither made nor licensed by SIEE for use on the PlayStation 2 console, we recommend discontinuing the use of that product.
