An update to the PlayStation®4 system software was released on June 21, 2016. Use this update to install system software version 3.55.

Main features in system software update 3.55

This system software update improves system performance.

Main features in system software update 3.50

  •  You can now create events. Select  (Events) > [Create Event], set the date and time, number of players who can join, and other details, and then send invitations to players you want to play with. You can also create events in (Messages).
  •  (Play Together) has been added to  (Party). For online multiplayer games that support the Play Together feature, you can automatically invite other players and start game sessions immediately.
  • Notification messages are now displayed when Friends go online. You can change the setting in   (Settings) > [Notifications] > [When Friends Go Online].
  • You can now change your online status to offline, even if you are actually online. When you log in to the PS4™ system, select [Log In With Online Status [Appear Offline]] from the options menu. You can also change your status from your profile screen or the quick menu.
  • You can now use Remote Play on a computer (Windows® PC or Mac) that has (PS4 Remote Play) installed. Download  (PS4 Remote Play) from the following website, install it, and then connect to your PS4™ system.  https://remoteplay.dl.playstation.net/remoteplay/
  • You can now broadcast gameplay on dailymotion™. *

Other new or revised features in version 3.50

  • You can now send event or party invitations to groups or communities.
  • You can now share other players' activities. In [What's New], for example, select an activity to share, and then select  (Share Activity).
  • When uploading screenshots or video clips, players can now tag others they’ve played games with. To choose who can tag you, select   (Settings) > [PlayStation™Network/Account Management] > [Privacy Settings] > [Sharing Your Experience] > [Tags]. 
  • Depending on the content, verified accounts are now displayed on the content info screen so that you can follow the accounts more easily. 
  • PlayStation™Network service status can now be checked by selecting   (Settings) > [Network] > [View Status of PlayStation™Network Services].
  • Notification messages are no longer displayed when Friends join parties. You can change the setting in   (Settings) > [Notifications] > [When Friends Join a Party].
  • Users of a certain age can now create sub accounts without waiting for a master account holder to sign in to PlayStation™Network. For sub account users to access network features, the master account holder must sign in and provide approval. The master account holder can also set parental controls in  (Settings) > [Parental Controls].
  • More features now support accessibility.

Do not download or install updates by methods other than those described in the system documentation or on this website. If you download or install update data from a different source, by a different method, or on a system that has been altered or modified in any way, the system might not operate properly and might not be able to install the official update data. Any of these actions can void the system warranty and affect your ability to obtain warranty services and repair services from Sony Interactive Entertainment.
  • Do not install system software soon before or soon after a power outage.
  • Do not turn off your system during the installation. Interrupting the installation can cause your system to be damaged.
  • You might not be able to use some applications or content without first updating the system software.

Update Methods

You can update the system software of the PS4™ system by any of the methods described below. To confirm that the update was completed successfully, once update process is completed, go to the function screen and select Settings (Settings) > [System] > [System Information]. If the version number of the system update file you used for updating the system is displayed in the [System Software] field, this means that the update was completed successfully.

Update using the Internet

The following things are needed to perform the update:

  • PlayStation®4 system
  • Internet connection (wired or wireless)
    Before using the network update feature, you must configure your PS4™ system's network settings. For details, refer to the user's guide for your PS4™ system.

From the function screen, select Settings (Settings) > [System Software Update]. Your system automatically checks over the Internet whether you have the latest version of the system software. If there is an update file for a later version, it is downloaded to the system. When downloading is complete, a notification message is displayed in the upper left corner of the screen. From the function screen, select Notification (Notifications) > [Downloads], and then follow the screens to perform the installation.

Update using a disc

The following things are needed to perform the update:

  • PlayStation®4 system
  • A disc that contains an update file

When you play a disc that contains a later version of the system software, a screen is displayed to guide you through the update process. Follow the screens to perform the update.

Update using a computer

For the standard update procedure, follow the steps below. Visit here for the procedure to initialize your PS4™ system and perform a new installation of the system software, such as for when you replace the hard disk drive.

The following things are needed to perform the update:

  • PlayStation®4 system
  • Computer connected to the Internet
  • USB storage device, such as a USB* flash drive
    * There must be approximately 320 MB of free space.

    • On the USB storage device, create folders for saving the update file.
      Using a computer, create a folder named "PS4". Inside that folder, create another folder named "UPDATE".
      PC Update
    • Download the update file, and save it in the "UPDATE" folder you created in
      step 1. Save the file with the file name "PS4UPDATE.PUP".
      Download Now Click to start the download.
    • Connect the USB storage device that the update file is saved on to your PS4™ system, and then from the function screen, select Settings (Settings) > [System Software Update].
      Follow the screens to complete the update.
  • If your PS4™ system does not recognize the update file, check that the folder names and file name are correct. Enter the folder names and file name in single-byte characters using uppercase letters.

Perform a New Installation of the System Software

This procedure is for initializing your PS4™ system and performing a new installation of the system software, such as for when you replace the hard disk drive.

  • Be careful when using an update file for reinstallation. All users and all data will be deleted.

The following things are needed to perform the update:

  • PlayStation®4 system
  • Computer connected to the Internet
  • USB storage device, such as a USB* flash drive
    * There must be approximately 900 MB of free space. 

    • On the USB storage device, create folders for saving the update file.
      Using a computer, create a folder named "PS4". Inside that folder, create another folder named "UPDATE".
      PC Update
    • Download the update file, and save it in the "UPDATE" folder you created in step 1.
      Save the file with the file name "PS4UPDATE.PUP".
      Download Now Click to start the download.
    • Turn off the power of your PS4™ system completely.
      Check that the power indicator is not lit. If the power indicator is lit up in orange, touch the power button on the PS4™ system for at least 7 seconds (until the system beeps a second time).
    • Connect the USB storage device that the update file is saved on to your PS4™ system, and then touch the power button for at least 7 seconds.
      The PS4™ system starts in safe mode.
    • Select [Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software)].
      Follow the screens to complete the update.
  • If your PS4™ system does not recognize the update file, check that the folder names and file name are correct. Enter the folder names and file name in single-byte characters using uppercase letters.
