An update to the PlayStation®4 system software was released on October 3, 2017. Use this update to install system software version 5.00.

Always update your PS4™ system to the latest version of the system software. By updating, you can enjoy additional features, improved usability, and enhanced security.

Main features in system software update 5.00

  • You can now add users of your PS4™ system as family members. This makes it easy to manage your child's account information and to restrict PS4™ system features. To add family members, select (Settings) > [Parental Controls/Family Management].
    • As the family manager, you can set up your family users with roles of Parent/Guardian, adult, and child.
    • Multiple adults can be in your family. The family manager can assign the role of Parent/Guardian to other adults in the family.
    • The family manager and family members who have the role of Parent/Guardian on the PS4™ system can adjust parental controls for the children in your family. Adults who are not a Parent/Guardian cannot set parental controls for children.
    • The family manager and Parent/Guardians can configure parental control settings for each child separately. Using parental controls, you can restrict use of online features and communication with other players, set restrictions for games, restrict use of the Internet browser, and set spending limits for PlayStation™Store.
    • The family manager and Parent/Guardians can configure parental controls anytime from a PC or smartphone.
    • Up to seven family members (including you) can be in your family and use online features.
  • You can now follow anyone, not just verified accounts. Select (Follow) on a person's profile screen, and their activities and broadcasts will appear in [What's New]. You automatically follow your Friends, but you have the option to unfollow them.
    • Recommendations for who to follow are now offered based on the games you play. Select (Friends) > (Follow).
    • You can now choose who can follow you and who can see your follow list. select  (Settings) > [Account Management] > [Privacy Settings], and then configure each setting.
  • (Custom Lists) has been added to  (Friends). Create custom lists to easily organize your Friends and choose players to send messages or game invitations to.
  • For certain broadcasts, (Communities) now appears on the (Live from PlayStation) viewing screen. To access the broadcaster's community, select (Communities).
  • You can now view (Notifications) on the quick menu.
  • The following languages have been added as system languages. Czech, Indonesian, Hungarian, Romanian, Vietnamese, Greek, Thai.
  • When broadcasting PlayStation®VR gameplay, you can now see spectator comments on your VR headset screen.

Other new or revised features in version 5.00

  • For (Messages), screen layout has been improved, and the following features have been added.
    • You can now receive music that has been shared with you as a message. Select the message to play the music.
    • Messages containing a URL now display a preview.
  • The following features have been added to the quick menu.
    • You can now select [Leave This Party] to leave a party.
    • You can now see albums and playlists for songs playing in Spotify®.
    • A clock has been added.
  • The following features have been added to (Settings) > [Notifications].
    • You can now disable pop-up notifications during video playback.
    • You can now choose the color of pop-up notifications.
    • You can now choose to show or hide message details in notifications.
  • You can now choose to broadcast in 1080p (60 fps) when using Twitch on your PlayStation®4 Pro console.
  • You can now enjoy Blu-ray Disc™ and DVD content in virtual surround sound when you connect headphones to PlayStation®VR.

The system software of the PS4™ system and system software updates installed on your system are subject to a limited license from Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc. Visit http://doc.dl.playstation.net/doc/ps4-eula/ for details.

Update Methods

You can update the system software of the PS4™ system by any of the methods described below. To confirm that the update was completed successfully, after the update process is completed, go to the function screen and select Settings (Settings) > [System] > [System Information]. If the version number of the system update file you used for updating the system appears in the [System Software] field, this means that the update was completed successfully.

Update using the Internet

Use your PS4™ system's network update feature to update the system.

Update using a disc

Use an update file contained on a game disc to update the system.

Update using a computer

This update method can be used if your PS4™ system is not connected to the Internet. Download the update file to your computer, and then save it on a USB storage device. Copy the saved file to the system storage of your PS4™ system to update the system.

Update using the Internet

The following things are needed to perform the update:

  • PlayStation®4 system
  • Internet connection (wired or wireless)
    Before using the network update feature, you must configure your PS4™ system's network settings. For details, refer to the user's guide for your PS4™ system.

From the function screen, select Settings (Settings) > [System Software Update] to make sure your system has the latest version of the system software. You can continue to use your system while downloading. If there is an update file for a later version, it automatically downloads. When downloading is complete, a notification message appears in the upper left corner of the screen. Select the message under Notification (Notifications) while viewing the function area, and then follow the on-screen instructions to perform the installation.

Update using a disc

The following things are needed to perform the update:

  • PlayStation®4 system
  • A disc that contains an update file

When you play a disc that contains a later version of the system software, a screen appears to guide you through the update process. Follow the on screen instructions to perform the update.

Update using a computer

For the standard update procedure, follow the steps below. Visit here for the procedure to initialize your PS4™ system and perform a new installation of the system software, such as for when you replace the hard disk drive.

The following things are needed to perform the update:

  • PlayStation®4 system
  • Computer connected to the Internet
  • USB storage device, such as a USB* flash drive
    * There must be approximately 375 MB of free space.

    • On the USB storage device, create folders for saving the update file.
      Using a computer, create a folder named "PS4". Inside that folder, create another folder named "UPDATE".
      PC Update
    • Download the update file, and save it in the "UPDATE" folder you created in
      step 1. Save the file with the file name "PS4UPDATE.PUP".
      Download Now Click to start the download.
    • Connect the USB storage device to your PS4™ system, and then from the function screen, select Settings (Settings) > [System Software Update].
      Follow the screens to complete the update.
  • If your PS4™ system does not recognize the update file, check that the folder names and file name are correct. Enter the folder names and file name in single-byte characters using uppercase letters.

Perform a New Installation of the System Software

This procedure is for initializing your PS4™ system and performing a new installation of the system software, such as for when you replace the hard disk drive.

  • Be careful when using an update file for reinstallation. All users and all data will be deleted.

The following things are needed to perform the update:

  • PlayStation®4 system
  • Computer connected to the Internet
  • USB storage device, such as a USB* flash drive
    * There must be approximately 955 MB of free space. 

    • On the USB storage device, create folders for saving the update file.
      Using a computer, create a folder named "PS4". Inside that folder, create another folder named "UPDATE".
      PC Update
    • Download the update file, and save it in the "UPDATE" folder you created in step 1.
      Save the file with the file name "PS4UPDATE.PUP".
      Download Now Click to start the download.
    • Turn off the power of your PS4™ system completely.
      Check that the power indicator is not lit. If the power indicator is lit up in orange, press the power button on the PS4™ system for at least 7 seconds (until the system beeps a second time).
    • Connect the USB storage device to your PS4™ system, and then press the power button for at least 7 seconds.
      The PS4™ system starts in safe mode.
    • Select [Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software)].
      Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.
  • If your PS4™ system does not recognize the update file, check that the folder names and file name are correct. Enter the folder names and file name in single-byte characters using uppercase letters.
