An update to the PlayStation®4 system software was released on April 21, 2015. You can use this to update your system software to version 2.51.

Always update your PS4™ system to the latest version of the system software. By updating, you can enjoy additional features, improved usability, and enhanced security.

About PlayStation®4 system software update version 2.51 (including 2.50)

PS4™ system software version 2.51 was released on April 21, 2015. This version adds or updates the following features:

Main features in system software update 2.51

New for 2.51

  • System software stability during use of some features has been improved.

New for 2.50

  • "PSNSM" has been renamed as "PlayStation™Network".
  • The PS4™ system can now keep applications suspended while in rest mode. Set a checkmark in [Keep Application Suspended] under Settings (Settings) > [Power Save Settings] > [Set Functions Available in Rest Mode].
  • You can now back up data stored on a PS4™ system to a USB storage device. Select Settings (Settings) > [System] > [Back Up and Restore].
  • You can now adjust accessibility settings such as zoom and button assignments. Select Settings (Settings) > [Accessibility].
  • You can now upload video clips to Dailymotion™.

Other new or revised features in version 2.50

Share

  • You can now test the connection speed when you start Share Play as a host. You can check whether your Internet connection speed is sufficient for Share Play.
  • You can now adjust the video resolution and frame rate settings for Share Play. Select [Video Quality for Share Play] in the party settings screen.

Trophies

  • Screenshots of scenes when you earn trophies are now saved automatically.
  • You can now share trophy details and screenshots of scenes when you earn trophies.
  • The following features have been added to the options menu of  (Trophies).
    • You can now search the Internet for details about your trophies.
    • You can now sort trophies by [Earned Date], [Not Earned], or [Grade].
    • You can now delete trophies with 0% achievement progress.

Settings

  • You can now upgrade a sub account to a master account. [Upgrade Your Account] is displayed in Settings (Settings) > [PlayStation™Network/Account Management] > [Account Information] when the sub account user becomes old enough to create a master account.
  • If your Sony Entertainment Network account and Facebook® account are linked, users who are your Facebook® friends are now displayed as players you may know. Select [Players You May Know] in Settings (Settings) > [PlayStation™Network/Account Management] > [Privacy Settings] > [Connecting with Friends] or [Protecting Your Information].
  • [Text Drop Shadow] has been added to Settings (Settings) > [Themes]. When text is hard to read, you can add a shadow style to improve readability.
  • PS4™ system software can now be updated automatically. Set a checkmark in [System Software Update Files] and [Install Automatically] under Settings (Settings) > [System] > [Automatic Downloads and Uploads]. 

Other

  • [Discover] has been added to  (Notifications). You can see tips on using the PS4™ system.

Share

  • You can now use the touch pad to operate playback of videos on discs.
    • You can flick left or right on the touch pad to move 15 seconds back or 15 seconds forward.
    • You can play video from a specific point by clicking the touch pad button and then dragging left or right on the touch pad to specify a chapter or time.
  • You can now enter up to 140 characters for your self-introduction in your profile.
  • When you send a Friend request to a player whose real name is displayed, your real name is now also displayed when the player accepts your Friend request.

Do not download or install updates by methods other than those described in the system documentation or on this website. If you download or install update data from a different source, by a different method, or on a system that has been altered or modified in any way, the system might not operate properly and might not be able to install the official update data. Any of these actions can void the system warranty and affect your ability to obtain warranty services and repair services from Sony Computer Entertainment.
  • Do not install system software soon before or soon after a power outage.
  • Do not turn off your system during the installation. Interrupting the installation can cause your system to be damaged.
  • You might not be able to use some applications or content without first updating the system software.

System Software

The system software of the PS4™ system and system software updates installed on your system are subject to a limited license from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Visit http://www.scei.co.jp/ps4-eula/ for details.

Update Methods

You can update the system software of the PS4™ system by any of the methods described below. To confirm that the update was completed successfully, once update process is completed, go to the function screen and select Settings (Settings) > [System] > [System Information]. If the version number of the system update file you used for updating the system is displayed in the [System Software] field, this means that the update was completed successfully.

Update using the Internet

The following things are needed to perform the update:

  • PlayStation®4 system
  • Internet connection (wired or wireless)
    Before using the network update feature, you must configure your PS4™ system's network settings. For details, refer to the user's guide for your PS4™ system.

From the function screen, select Settings (Settings) > [System Software Update]. Your system automatically checks over the Internet whether you have the latest version of the system software. If there is an update file for a later version, it is downloaded to the system. When downloading is complete, a notification message is displayed in the upper left corner of the screen. From the function screen, select Notification (Notifications) > [Downloads], and then follow the screens to perform the installation.

Update using a disc

The following things are needed to perform the update:

  • PlayStation®4 system
  • A disc that contains an update file

When you play a disc that contains a later version of the system software, a screen is displayed to guide you through the update process. Follow the screens to perform the update.

Update using a computer

For the standard update procedure, follow the steps below. Visit here for the procedure to initialize your PS4™ system and perform a new installation of the system software, such as for when you replace the hard disk drive.

The following things are needed to perform the update:

  • PlayStation®4 system
  • Computer connected to the Internet
  • USB storage device, such as a USB* flash drive
    * There must be approximately 320 MB of free space.

    • On the USB storage device, create folders for saving the update file.
      Using a computer, create a folder named "PS4". Inside that folder, create another folder named "UPDATE".
      PC Update
    • Download the update file, and save it in the "UPDATE" folder you created in
      step 1. Save the file with the file name "PS4UPDATE.PUP".
      Download NowClick to start the download.
    • Connect the USB storage device that the update file is saved on to your PS4™ system, and then from the function screen, select Settings (Settings) > [System Software Update].
      Follow the screens to complete the update.
  • If your PS4™ system does not recognize the update file, check that the folder names and file name are correct. Enter the folder names and file name in single-byte characters using uppercase letters.

 

Perform a New Installation of the System Software

This procedure is for initializing your PS4™ system and performing a new installation of the system software, such as for when you replace the hard disk drive.

  • Be careful when using an update file for reinstallation. All users and all data will be deleted.

The following things are needed to perform the update:

  • PlayStation®4 system
  • Computer connected to the Internet
  • USB storage device, such as a USB* flash drive
    * There must be approximately 900 MB of free space. 

    • On the USB storage device, create folders for saving the update file.
      Using a computer, create a folder named "PS4". Inside that folder, create another folder named "UPDATE".
      PC Update
    • Download the update file, and save it in the "UPDATE" folder you created in step 1.
      Save the file with the file name "PS4UPDATE.PUP".
      Download NowClick to start the download.
    • Turn off the power of your PS4™ system completely.
      Check that the power indicator is not lit. If the power indicator is lit up in orange, touch the power button on the PS4™ system for at least 7 seconds (until the system beeps a second time).
    • Connect the USB storage device that the update file is saved on to your PS4™ system, and then touch the power button for at least 7 seconds.
      The PS4™ system starts in safe mode.
    • Select [Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software)].
      Follow the screens to complete the update.
  • If your PS4™ system does not recognize the update file, check that the folder names and file name are correct. Enter the folder names and file name in single-byte characters using uppercase letters.
