Frequently Asked Questions

What is PlayStation Now?

PlayStation Now is the subscription service that allows on-demand access to a vast library of over 800 PS4, PS3, and PS2 games, including PlayStation exclusives, greatest hits, acclaimed masterpieces, and games for the whole family. Stream any game in the library on-demand to your PS4 or PC, and download more than 300 PS4 games from the PS Now library to your PS4.

Does PS Now support multiplayer?

Yes, games in the PlayStation Now library allow access to the same local split-screen and online multiplayer modes as paid retail and digital versions of the games. PS Now players are connected with the same live servers as people who have purchased a copy of the game. In addition, PS4 and PS3 multiplayer games can be enjoyed through PS Now without a PlayStation Plus subscription (PS Plus is required for online multiplayer for PS4 games outside of the PS Now service). Multiplayer invites can also be sent and received, just like normal.

Do games in the PS Now service have Trophies?

Yes, every game in the service supports the same trophies as when you own the game. Trophies are unlocked in real time and sync to your account. PS4 gameplay activity and trophy unlocks appear in your activity feed seen by other players on the PS4 dashboard.

If I have already played a PS4 game that is in the service, can I continue with my own save file?

Yes, you can copy save files to and from the PS Now cloud save storage associated with your PSN account via the PS Plus cloud save storage (requires valid PS Plus subscription). You can continue a game on PS Now to finish your play-through by copying your old save data to the service, and you can start a game in PS Now and then download your save file to your PS Plus storage, then copy to your own PS4, so you can finish the game later on if you purchase a digital or retail copy.

What devices can I use to play games with my PlayStation Now subscription?

PlayStation Now is currently supported on the following devices:

  • PlayStation®4 – streaming and game downloads
  • PC – streaming access only

All game progress and save data made on any of these devices is saved to the PS Now save cloud, so users may log into their PSN account from any other PS Now-supported device to access the same save data. PS4 gameplay data may be transferred back and forth between the PS Now save cloud and the PS Plus online storage (requires valid PS Plus subscription).

Game Downloads - Frequently Asked Questions

What devices can I use to download and play games?

Games can only be downloaded to PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 4 Pro systems. Download to PC is not supported.

How do I download a game?

Select the Download button at the bottom of the Game Details page.

As I browse, how will I know if a game can be downloaded?

As you browse through the games on PS Now, you’ll see a tag in the game preview section at the top of the screen telling you if the game is downloadable. In addition, when you view the Game Details page of a downloadable game, you’ll see the [Download] button that actually triggers the download.

Which games are downloadable to PS4?

Most PS4 and PS2 games in the service are downloadable. Check the preview section or Game Details Page for the downloadable game tag.

Can I stream and download a game at the same time?

Yes.  Depending on your available bandwidth, though, you may experience reduced streaming quality or decreased download speed.

How many games can I download from PS Now?

There is no limit to the number of games you can download, as long as you have sufficient hard drive space.

When I’m offline can I play games I’ve downloaded?

Yes.  However when playing a downloaded game, you’ll need to connect to PSN every few days to validate your PS Now subscription and maintain your access to the game.

Do DLC and add-ons work with downloaded games?

Yes. You can purchase and use any DLC and add-on content with games downloaded from PlayStation Now.  If your PlayStation Now subscription expires, causing you to lose access to the downloaded game, you’ll also lose access to the DLC and add-on content associated with that game.  However, should you re-subscribe to PlayStation Now, or purchase the game from PlayStation Store, you’ll be able to use your purchased DLC and add-on content again.

Where are the games I’ve downloaded from PS Now?

You can launch downloaded games from the PS4 home screen, from your Library, or from the game’s details page within PS Now.

Can I still stream games I’ve downloaded?

Yes.  You can stream games that you’ve downloaded by launching them through the PS Now app. However in order to keep your game progress current, you’ll have to transfer saved game data from your downloaded game to the PS Now streamed game data cloud storage. See here for more details. Please note that you need an active PS Plus subscription or trial subscription to transfer this data.

When I play a downloaded game, why don’t I see the progress I’ve made in that game when I streamed it?

Saved game data is not automatically transferred between games installed on your local PS4 system and streaming games launched on PS Now. In order to keep your game progress current, you’ll have to transfer saved game data from the PS Now streamed game data cloud storage to your PS4 local storage. See here for more details. Please note that you need an active PS Plus subscription or trial subscription to transfer this data.

How do I transfer my saved game data from streamed games to my downloaded PS Now games, and vice versa?

You’ll find the instructions for transferring saved game data from a streamed game to your PS4 system here, and instructions on transferring save data from your PS4 system to the PS Now cloud storage here.  Please note that you need an active PS Plus subscription or trial subscription to transfer this data.

Can I use VR or other peripherals with games downloaded from PS Now?

As with all games downloaded from PlayStation Store or installed via disc, games downloaded via PlayStation Now will allow you to use any peripherals the game supports.

If I download a game from PlayStation Now and later decide to purchase it, do I have to re-download the game? And what happens to my saved game data?

You can just launch the game from your content launcher or Library like normal.

How is performance different between playing a downloaded game and playing the streaming version of the same game?

Games downloaded from PS Now run locally on your PS4 console at their native graphic quality and sound output modes.
