Getting the most from PlayStation®VR

Find out how to connect and operate your PlayStation®VR when using a PlayStation®4 console. If you're using a PlayStation®5 console, the item names and some of the functions shown may vary.

Making the right PS VR connections

Make sure that you've properly connected the cables to your PS VR, PS4™ console or PS5™ console, PlayStation®Camera, and TV. If the PS4 console or PS5 console screen doesn’t appear on your TV or in your VR headset, check your connections.

Playing PS VR games on a PS5 console requires a VR headset, PlayStation®Camera for PS4™* and a PlayStation®Camera adaptor (no purchase required). 

*Model series CUH-ZEY1 or CUH-ZEY2

  • For the best PS VR experience on PS5 consoles, we recommend using a DUALSHOCK®4 wireless controller.
  • Selected games may require PlayStation®Move motion controllers, or may be compatible with the PlayStation®VR aim controller. 
  • The new HD camera for PS5 consoles is not compatible with PS VR.
  • The VR headset, PS Camera, DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller, PS Move controllers and PS VR aim controller are all sold separately from PS5 consoles. 

PS VR model CUH-ZVR1 can be identified by:

  • A sliding cover on the Processor Unit.
  • A serial number on the rear of the Processor Unit starting with P01/P02.
  • A power button on the in-line remote.

PS VR model CUH-ZVR2 can be identified by:

  • A solid Processor Unit. 
  • A serial number on the rear of Processor Unit starting with P03. 
  • A power button on the underside of the headset scope.

Please connect PS VR using the supplied accessories. You cannot use a combination of different VR headset and processor unit models.  

For example, a CUH-ZVR1 VR headset will not work if connected to a CUH-ZVR2 processor unit.

Getting ready to play

Limit your use of PS VR to within the Play Area. You can interact with games more directly because the camera captures the position, direction, and movement of your VR headset.

Represents the width and depth of the Play Area. The height of the Play Area depends on the range captured by the camera.
For best results, position yourself 1.5 m – 2.0 m (4.9 ft – 6.6 ft) from the camera.
Place the camera in a vibration-free location. Adjust the height, direction, and angle of the camera. Play directly in front of the camera.
Make sure that bright light from windows, mirrors, or room lighting does not shine into the camera. Avoid pointing the camera at light-emitting devices such as computer monitors.
Clear an area larger than the Play Area of all obstacles before using PS VR.
It is recommended that you charge your wireless controller ahead of time, then disconnect the USB cable before play.

Wearing glasses with PS VR

You can continue to wear your glasses while wearing the VR headset. When adjusting the scope position, move the scope slowly so that the internal lenses and your glasses do not touch each other and become scratched. Depending on the size of your glasses and the shape of your head, the lenses may come into contact with your glasses.

View content with PS VR

PS VR delivers 360-degree omnidirectional 3D video and images in VR mode, and non-VR content on a virtual screen in cinematic mode.

When in cinematic mode, if the screen you see in your VR headset has drifted or isn’t centered, you can try the following to correct the issue. 

  • Press and hold the OPTIONS button on your controller to reset the screen position. 
  • If the issue persists, take off the VR headset and leave the power on. Place the VR headset in a location that is stable and free from vibration for approximately 10 seconds.

At times the camera might not properly track the position, direction, or movement of your VR headset or controller. On your PS4 console or PS5 console, go to Settings > Devices > PlayStation VR and then try these adjustments:

  • Adjust PlayStation Camera
    Position your camera so that it properly recognizes your face.
  • Adjust Tracking Lights
    Calibrate tracking of the lights on your VR headset and controllers.
