    Time to get Lost

Explore the mysterious island for yourself in Lost on PlayStation 3.

With its heady mix of mystery, intrigue, monsters and excellent characters, Lost has been one of the TV smashes of the new millennium, drawing in millions of viewers across the globe, winning countless awards, and confusing pretty much everyone.

Now the series gets the videogame treatment with Lost on PlayStation 3, a third person action adventure that to captures the essence of the show, with players taking control of Elliot, a photojournalist and survivor of the fated Oceanic flight 815.

    Selective memory

Elliot has awoken after the plane crash with portions of his memory missing, and, armed with nothing more than some torn photographs, it's up to players to piece together his mysterious past through the series' trademark flashbacks. Mimicking the look and feel of the show exactly, the game starts with you awaking in dense jungle, missing your memory, and tasks you with finding out just who Elliot is and how he came to be on that fateful plane journey.

While the majority of the game is set on the island, specific objects throughout the game such as a bottle of water or a backpack trigger flashbacks, seen through Elliot's eyes. Fragments of one of Elliot's photographs are seen at the start of the scene, and you are tasked with recreating the shot to trigger a portion of Elliot's returning memory. Once these memories have been triggered Elliot can use the new information to his advantage to solve the many mysteries throughout the island.

While it may be a third person action adventure at heart, there's plenty of puzzle solving to be done, as well as an old-school adventure game style conversation system that lets you interact with the characters from the show in real depth. That's not to say that the game is short on action though - the black smoke monster makes an appearance as well as other mysterious hostile elements that you're going to want to get away from as fast as possible. The controls are fluid and easy to get used to, with the left stick controlling movement and the right stick controlling the camera - if you've ever played an action adventure game before you'll be right at home.

There are also cave exploration sequences as you work your way further into the dark heart of the island, that require you to light your way with a burning torch while avoiding falling into holes, all made brilliantly atmospheric through the use of lighting, shadow and music.

    Previously, on Lost

The game is split into seven chapters, each structured like an episode of the TV show, right down to a "previously, on Lost" voice-over and recap at the start of each one. Each chapter has its own flashback that you have to uncover, and also has a character that functions as a trader, with whom you can trade coconuts, bottles of water and food for useful items such as torches, fuses and even firearms. Naturally, there's no such thing as change, so you will need to be careful about which items you trade so as to equal the exact value of the items you're receiving.

Fans of the TV show should also be pleased to know that each episode has been plotted by Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, the masterminds behind Lost's success, and that the actors who play Ben Linus, Mikhail Bakunin, Sun, Desmond , Claire and Tom all reprise their roles.

Ubisoft has done an incredible job of creating a character and story that fits perfectly into the world of Lost, while giving players the freedom to roam, explore and investigate things to their heart's content. The game matches the look and feel of the TV show perfectly, while providing a challenging, enjoyable and satisfying game experience that anyone can enjoy. If you're a fan of the show, however, then there's simply no excuse for missing out on this chance to explore the mysteries of the island for yourself.
