How to play video and music from discs and USB drives on PlayStation

How to play media discs on PS5 consoles

To play a Blu-ray Disc™ or DVD, insert the disc into the disc slot. Disc Player appears on your media home, and playback can begin. The disc player supports the formats listed below.

  • Ultra HD Blu-ray™
  • Blu-ray Disc™

    BD-R/RE (BDAV, BDMV)
  • DVD
    DVD-ROM
    DVD-R/RW*2 (video mode, VR mode*3)
    DVD+R/RW*2

The PS5 Digital Edition console doesn’t support disc-based games or media.

How to play media discs on PS4 consoles 

To play a Blu-ray Disc™ or DVD, insert the disc into the disc slot, and then select the content from the content area. Your PS4™ console must enable the disc playback feature over the Internet (only once) before you can play any BDs or DVDs. After this feature is enabled, your console doesn't have to connect to the Internet to play BDs or DVDs.

For continuous playback of copyright-protected BDs, the encryption key for AACS (Advanced Access Content System) might need to be renewed. The encryption key is automatically renewed when your PS4™ console is connected to the Internet.

Unsupported disc formats on PS5 consoles and PS4 consoles

PS5 consoles and PS4 consoles don’t support playback of these types of discs.

  • CD
  • BD-RE ver.1.0
  • BD-R/RE XL
  • DVDs that have not been finalized

Don’t use the following discs. Doing so may damage your console.

  • 8 cm discs
  • Non-circular discs, such as discs in the shape of a card, star, or heart.
  • Discs that are cracked or deformed, or discs that have been repaired.
  • Discs that have stickers or paper labels on them.

Please note that,

  • A DualDisc features one side that conforms to the DVD standard, and the other side with only audio. The audio-only side cannot be played on your console.
  • Some discs may not be playable due to scratches, dust, the quality of recording, or the characteristics of the recording device.
  • In rare instances, DVDs, BDs and other media may not play properly on your console. This is primarily due to variations in the manufacturing process or encoding of the software.

How to play video from a USB drive on PS5 consoles and PS4 consoles

Make sure the USB drive is formatted with either the exFAT or FAT32 file system.

  1. Using a computer, create a folder in the root directory of the USB drive, and then place your video files in the folder. 
  2. Select Media Gallery from your games home on your console. 
  3. Connect the USB drive to your PS5 console, and then select USB. A list of video files on your USB drive appears. Select a file to play it.

Maximum video resolution is 3840 x 2160. Media Gallery will not play copyright-protected files. Some types of content distributed over the internet and by other means have playback restrictions. For details, contact the content provider.

  1. Using a computer, create a folder in the root directory of the USB drive, and then place your video files in the folder. 
  2. Select Media Player from the content area. 
  3. Connect the USB drive to your PS4 console, and then select USB. A list of video files on your USB drive appears. Select a file to play it.

How to play music from a USB drive on PS5 consoles and PS4 consoles

Make sure the USB drive is formatted with either the exFAT or FAT32 file system.

  1. Using a computer, create a “Music” folder in the root directory of the USB drive, and then place your audio files in the "Music" folder. 
  2. Connect the USB drive to your PS5 console. 
  3. Select Music in the control center. USB Drive appears in your playlist. 
  4. Select USB Drive. 
  5. Select a file to play it.

Supported file formats

  • FLAC 
  • MP3 
  • AAC 

It might not be possible to play some files due to their data type or file size. This app will not play copyright-protected music files.

  1. Using a computer, create a “Music” folder in the root directory of the USB drive, and then place your audio files in the “Music” folder. 
  2. Connect the USB drive to your PS4 console. 
  3. Select Library in the content area. 
  4. Select USB Music Player in the content area. 
  5. Select the music you want to play.
    To play all of the music in the folder, highlight the folder, press the OPTIONS button, and then select Play. 

Some devices are not compatible due to shape or design.
