PlayStation 3 system/XMB Menu keeps freezing

Find out what to do if your XMB keeps freezing on your PlayStation 3.

 
 
  1. Ensure that the latest system software update is installed on your PlayStation 3 system.
  • To check the system software, access the XMB Menu and choose System Settings > [System Information].
  • Visit the Sony PlayStation update page and update to the latest version of the system software.
 
 
  1. Ensure that your PlayStation 3 system is adequately positioned and ventilated.
  • Ensure that the PlayStation 3 system is situated in a well-ventilated area and that the system air vents are not obstructed.
  • Ensure that the PlayStation 3 system is kept away from excessive dust, smoke, steam, extreme temperatures, humidity or direct sunlight.

  1. Restore the PlayStation 3 system’s default settings.
  • In some situations, it may be necessary to restore the PlayStation 3 system’s default settings.
  • Access the XMB Menu and choose Settings > [System Settings] > [Restore Default Settings].
  • A list of settings will be displayed. Select the settings you want to restore.
  • When the operation is complete, the system setup screen will be displayed.
  • You must complete system setup before you can use the PlayStation 3 system again.
 
 
  1. If you are still unable to access the XMB Menu, start the PlayStation 3 system in Safe Mode and choose the following options from the Safe Mode Menu:
  • (3) Restore File System: The PlayStation 3 system will try to repair all areas on the HDD where files can be saved.
  • (4) Rebuild Database: The PlayStation 3 system will delete all data on the HDD and rebuild the database.
