When it comes to 2D beat 'em ups, it's fair to say that Capcom pretty much wrote the history books. Capcom Fighting Jam takes characters from five of the illustrious developer's seminal scrappers - Street Fighter II, Darkstalkers, Street Fighter III, Red Earth, and Street Fighter Alpha - and puts them back into combat for an old school battle royale.
If you've ever wondered who would have the upper hand in a bout between SF III's Chun-Li and Darkstalkers' Felicia, this is your chance to find out. Although the characters and backgrounds both benefit from an added layer of PlayStation 2 gloss, the retro gameplay is as authentic as it gets. Each character retains their exact moves from the original games, all mapped out on a classic six-button control scheme.
Combatants' strengths and weaknesses must be carefully considered, particularly in Capcom Fighting Jam's two-on-two battles, in which you get to mix and match well-loved characters from the five classic games, picking one fighter for each bout. Only by exploiting the relative strengths of the different fighting systems will you end up victorious.
As with the stellar original games on which it's based, Capcom Fighting Jam has a variety of modes to keep you busy, including Arcade, VS, and Training, making for an essential 2D beat 'em up package.
