PSN voice chat troubleshooting

Learn how to troubleshoot common PlayStation™Network voice chat issues on PlayStation®5 consoles and PlayStation®4 consoles.

Troubleshoot PS5 console audio settings

If you're having trouble with voice chat, try adjusting the following settings.

  1. Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select Output Device and select an audio output device to use.

  2. You can also adjust what audio you hear through headphones by selecting Output to Headphones.

Your controller has a mic that you can use for voice chat and voice input. Press the mute button on your controller to mute and unmute your mic.

  1. To configure the microphone settings for your controller, a headset or a USB mic, go to Settings > Sound > Microphone
  2. From this menu you can change your Input Device and Adjust Microphone Level.
  • Press the PS button to go to the control centre and select Game Base. Then, select your party from the list.

  • You can switch between party chat and game chat by selecting the drop-down menu on the voice chat card in the control centre.

  • You can adjust the audio balance between voice chat and other audio on your console by selecting the slider on the voice chat card in the control centre.

Troubleshoot PS4 console audio settings

If you're having trouble with voice chat, try adjusting the following settings.

  1. Go to Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Output Devices.

  2. If you are using headphones, select Output to Headphones to select what sound comes through headphones.
  • The setting Headset Connected to Controller is displayed only when a headset is connected to your DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller.
  • Due to the PS4 console specifications, voice chat and game audio cannot output to both the headset and TV.
  1. Go to Settings > Devices > Audio Devices.
  2. Select Adjust Microphone Level.

If the microphone is working, the Input Volume bar will respond.

If the input volume meter does not respond, try a different headset or controller. If audio cannot be exchanged with a specific device, it is possible that the device has a problem.

  1. Go to Party > Party Settings > Chat Audio.
  2. Select Prioritise Party Chat or Prioritise Game Chat

Troubleshoot your internet connection

If you lose connection, or the microphone icon flashes, during party voice chat, please try the following:

  1. Review your Internet connection. If possible, use a wired connection.
  2. Turn your console and your internet device (modern and router) off. Wait 5 minutes and then turn them back on.
  3. If you use a router, please try opening the ports. Speak to your Internet service provider about how to open the following ports on your router:
  • TCP: 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480
  • UDP: 3478, 3479

Troubleshoot your device

Please try the following troubleshooting methods for each device.

  • Make sure that the headset MIC switch is not set to the “OFF” side.

  • Please try reconnecting the device.

  • If you have another wireless controller, please try connecting the headset to another controller.

  • Make sure the wireless surround headset microphone is not muted. When muted, the wireless surround headset status light is purple. The position of the light/button differs depending on the product. For details, refer to the instruction manual.
  • Visit the guide below to adjust the volume balance for your PlayStation wireless headset.
