How to Download PS4 System Software Files

Follow the instructions in this section, when you are unable to update the system software from your PS4 directly.

PS4 System Software Update File

Downloading Requirements

  • A computer connected to the Internet.

  • An external storage device or a USB flash drive with at least 460 MB of free space.

The system software of the PS4 system and system software updates installed on your system are subject to a limited license from Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc. Visit the System Software License Agreement for details.

Downloading Instructions

  1. On the external drive, create a folder named "PS4". Inside that folder, create another folder named "UPDATE".

  2. Download this file: agree to terms and download update.

  3. Save your file in the "UPDATE" folder as "PS4UPDATE.PUP".

If you get the error: "SU-41350-3 - Cannot find the update file" it means that the PUP file was renamed by your computer due to multiple downloads of the same file.

Solution: Check the download location on your PC or Mac, delete any previous versions. Make sure the current the file is named: PS4UPDATE.PUP.

Access to and use of the PS4 system software update are subject to your acceptance of the System Software License Agreement.  Before downloading the system software update, you should carefully read and understand the terms of the System Software License Agreement.

Installation Instructions

  1. Connect the USB storage device that the update file is saved on to your PS4 system, and then from the function screen, select [Settings] > [System Software Update]. Follow the screens to complete the update.

A full system software installation is required when replacing the internal hard drive on your PS4.

  2. Download this file: agree to terms and download complete software.


    *Be careful when using an update file for reinstallation. All users and all data will be deleted.

     

  3. Save your file in the "UPDATE" folder as "PS4UPDATE.PUP".

Installation Instructions

  1. Turn off the power of your PS4 system completely. Check that the power indicator is not lit. If the power indicator is lit up in orange, touch the power button on the PS4 system for at least 7 seconds (until the system beeps a second time).

  2. Connect the USB storage device that the update file is saved on to your PS4 system, and then touch the power button for at least 7 seconds. The PS4 system starts in safe mode.

  3. Select [Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software)]. Follow the screens to complete the update.

Notices

  • Do not download or install the update using data other than the official update file provided online by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Do not download or install updates by methods other than those described in the system documentation or on this website. If you download or install update data from a different source, by a different method, or on a system that has been altered or modified in any way, the system might not operate properly and might not be able to install the official update data. Any of these actions can void the system warranty and affect your ability to obtain warranty services and repair services from Sony Interactive Entertainment.
  • Do not install system software soon before or soon after a power outage.
  • Do not turn off your system during the installation. Interrupting the installation can cause your system to be damaged.
  • You might not be able to use some applications or content without first updating the system software.
