How to change power-saving settings on PlayStation consoles

Learn how you can adjust the power-saving settings on PlayStation®5 consoles and PlayStation®4 consoles.

What are the PS5 console power options?

Your PS5® console can be put into three different power states: on, rest mode, and off.

To preserve your data and prevent damage to it, make sure you either turn off your PS5 console, or place it in rest mode properly. When you turn off your PS5 console or place it in rest mode, the controller also turns off.

Important
Do not disconnect the AC power cord while the power indicator is lit or blinking. Doing this may cause data loss, corruption, or damage to your console.

Your PS4® console can be put into three different power states: on, rest mode, and off.

To preserve your data and prevent damage to it, make sure you either turn off your PS4 console, or place it in rest mode properly. When you turn off your PS4 console or place it in rest mode, the controller also turns off.

How to adjust power settings on PS5 consoles

When you're not using your PS5 console, you can put it in rest mode (a low-powered state).

  1. From the home screen, select Settings  > System > Power Saving
  2. Configure Set Time Until PS5 Enters Rest Mode.
Your PS5 console can automatically enter rest mode when it's been inactive for a certain time. Set how long your PS5 console can stay inactive before it automatically enters rest mode.
  • If you select Don't Put in Rest Mode, your PS5 console stays turned on, and consumes more power.
  1. Go to the function screen and select Settings > Power Save Settings > Set Time Until PS4 Turns Off.
  2. Select Media Playback or General (Applications).

With the default settings, your PS4 console will automatically enter rest mode or turn off when it hasn't been used for a certain period of time. If an application is active, such as when a video is playing, the system might not automatically enter rest mode or turn off.

Features available in rest mode on PS5 consoles

Select the features you want to use in rest mode. If you enable any of these features, your PS5 console doesn't automatically lower power consumption below 0.5 W when entering rest mode. The more features you enable, the more power your PS5 console consumes while in rest mode.

  • Supply Power to USB Ports
Connect your controllers to your console to charge them while your console is in rest mode. If you're using a console from the CFI-2000/7000 model group, you can select Adaptive.
  • Stay Connected to the Internet
While connected to the internet in rest mode, you can download games bought on PlayStation App and pre-ordered games to your console.

You can also automatically update games and the system software.

  1. Go to Settings > Power Save Settings > Set Features Available in Rest Mode
  2. Configure the following:
  • Supply Power to USB Ports
Controllers can be charged while in rest mode. If you select 3 hours, power will be supplied to USB ports only for 3 hours after entering rest mode. After 3 hours, the system will lower its power consumption to save energy.
  • Stay Connected to the Internet
Select the checkbox to automatically enable download and upload of data while your system is in rest mode. You can use PlayStation App to start a PS4 console over a network by selecting the checkbox for Enable Turning On PS4 from Network.

You can also automatically update games and the system software.

  • Keep Application Suspended
Select the checkbox to allow your PS4 console to enter rest mode without closing any applications. When your system exits rest mode, the applications will resume operation.
