If you’re having disc problems on your PlayStation®5 console, try these troubleshooting steps.

How to troubleshoot disc reading issues on PS5 consoles

Reinsert the disc into your console after each of these steps.

  1. When your PS5® console is oriented vertically on the console stand, the labeled side of the disc should face left as you insert it.
  1. Clean the disc with a soft, clean cloth to remove any dirt or prints.
  2. Try inserting another game, Blu-Ray disc, or DVD.
PS5 consoles can't play burned discs or audio CDs.
  3. Access Safe Mode and select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
  1. If the Rebuild Database option doesn’t resolve the issue, access Safe Mode and select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).

Warning: Selecting Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deletes all information on the console. Visit the guide below to download the reinstallation version of the PS5 console system software.

How to remove a stuck disc from a PS5 console

Before you begin, you need:

  • A well-lit room with a table to work on.

  • A #1 Phillips or cross-hatch screwdriver.

  • A small flashlight (optional).

Note: Don’t turn on or play on your console with the cover off.

  1. Press and hold the power button for three seconds to turn off your PS5 console, then remove all cables and devices from the console.

  2. Place the console on a soft cloth on a flat surface and remove the base.

  3. Position the console so the disc slot is on your left side.

  4. Remove the cover from the disc drive of your PS5 console.

  1. With the cover removed, look for black rings on the disc drive, including a circle of black plastic film. You can remove this film, or push through it to reach the screw it is covering. (Newer consoles may not have this plastic cover.)
  2. Using a #1 Phillips or a cross-hatch screwdriver, turn the screw CLOCKWISE until the full disc is almost completely visible.
  3. Gently remove the disc.
Do not forcibly pull the disc from the disc drive.
  4. Replace the bottom cover by positioning it slightly away (about 2cm or 3/4 inch) from the top edge and sliding it back into place.
There is an audible click when the cover is secured.
  5. Reconnect all cables and turn on the console.

Check the disc for scratches and dirt

  • Clean a scratched or dirty disc using a lint-free cleaning cloth made specifically for cleaning Blu-ray Discs or DVDs.
  • Clean the disc by wiping from the center towards the edge of the disc.
