How to troubleshoot picture and sound issues on PS4 consoles

Find out how to resolve picture and sound issues on PlayStation®4 consoles.

No image output from your PS4 console?

If your PS4® console and screen are turned on but there is no image, please try the following steps:

  1. Check the HDMI connection
Make sure the included HDMI cable is securely connected to both your PS4 console and the screen*. If possible, try using a different HDMI cable.
*If your screen has multiple HDMI ports, try using a different one. Make sure to also have the correct channel selected for HDMI.

If you're using a HDMI cable other than the one included with your PS4 console, make sure that it’s a high-speed HDMI cable or premium high-speed HDMI cable that's compatible with your PS4 console.

  1. Connect directly to the HDMI port
Connect your PS4 console directly to the HDMI port on your screen. If you have other devices connected to your screen (sound bar, home theater, game capture devices, etc.), disconnect them to see if this fixes the issue.
  1. Turn the power back on
Turn off your screen and PS4 console completely. Disconnect the power cables, wait 20 minutes, and then reconnect the power cables. Turn on everything to check for the image.
  2. Check the device firmware
Make sure your screen or audio device has the latest firmware version. Refer to the manufacturer's user manual for additional settings needed for high-resolution signals.

Please see the guide below for setting up 4K resolution on PlayStation®4 Pro consoles.

No audio output from your PS4 console?

If there is no sound coming from your screen or sound system, please try the following steps:

  1. Adjust audio settings
Make sure your screen and any other audio devices aren’t muted and that the volume is loud enough.
  2. Check audio output settings
Make sure your PS4 console audio output is set to an HDMI device.
  1. Update system software
If you're experiencing sound issues, try updating your PS4 console system software to the latest version.
  1. Check the HDMI cable
A faulty HDMI cable can cause audio problems. Try using a different HDMI cable.
  2. Connect directly to the HDMI port
Connect your PS4 console directly to the HDMI port on your screen. If you have other devices connected to your screen (sound bar, home theater, game capture devices, etc.), disconnect them to see if this fixes the issue.
  3. Check the device firmware
Make sure your screen or audio device has the latest firmware version. Refer to the manufacturer's user manual for additional settings needed to support high-resolution signals.
