What is Marathon?

Scavenge the lost colony of Tau Ceti IV in a survival extraction FPS from the creators of Halo and Destiny. 

Infiltrate the derelict colony of Tau Ceti IV — a dark, sci-fi world of competing Runners, hostile security forces, and unpredictable environments. Marathon is the new online-focused extraction shooter from veteran developer Bungie.

Operating alone, or as part of a crew, scavenge locations across the planet for weapons, gear, and upgrades. As you move through each zone, tense moments of exploration give way to fast-paced multiplayer combat built with Bungie’s signature gunplay.

Survival is key: Limited ammo and resources, unpredictable alliances, and the risk of losing all your gear, shape the stakes of every encounter.

Four distinct locations to scavenge

Deserted research facilities, rugged landscapes and derelict outposts — make your way through diverse maps rich with valuables to salvage. Danger lurks at every turn with UESC security forces, dynamic events, and environmental hazards. Each zone escalates in difficulty, preparing you for the ultimate run aboard the Marathon colony ship which lies stranded in orbit above Tau Ceti.

Powerful, configurable Runner shells

Choose from one of six classes. Each shell offers unique tactical foundations and can be combined with weapons, body implants, and core system upgrades to suit your playstyle. Work with friends — or even rivals — to build an unstoppable team that leverages your combined strengths, dominating runs and bringing home the most sought-after loot.

Fragile alliances with other players

Infiltrate as a crew of two or three (with friends or via matchmaking), go it alone in solo lobbies, or sneak into in-progress matches as Rook — a lone scavenger with nothing to lose. How you deal with rival Runners is up to you. Hide, flank, shoot on sight, or team up via proximity chat to even the odds. Whatever happens, remember that allies and enemies can switch sides at any time.

Build power through influence

There are six competing factions on Tau Ceti, each looking to expand their influence. Complete faction contracts to grow your baseline power, unlocking season-long benefits like Runner shell upgrades, more powerful starting loadouts, expanded vault space, and specialized trades-ins on your loot.

Destroyer

The team’s tank. Destroyer shells are aggressive, relentless, and built to charge headfirst into combat. Equipped with modified Mjolnir armor, thrusters, and a Riot Barricade, they draw fire and hold the front line.

Assassin

Silent, precise and elusive, Assassin shells thrive in the shadows. With a synthetic smokescreen and invisibility shroud, they maneuver unseen, strike and exfil before the enemy knows what hit them. 

Recon

Tactical disruptors, Recon shells expose hidden threats with echo pulses, track targets using holographic footstep trails, and lock down enemy movement with energy-sapping drones.

Vandal

The agile attackers, Vandal shells are built for speed. With a unique double jump ability and extended slide, they chain advanced movement with hit-and-run tactics to get in, break the enemy line, and get out.

Thief

The team’s loot goblin. Thief shells are designed for high-risk scavenging: spotting gear, knocking loot out of foes, and swinging through the battlefield with a high-mobility grappling hook.

Triage

The combat medic. Triage shells provide support for allies: reviving squadmates with their onboard reboot ability and using med-drones to keep your team in the fight through shared consumable benefits.

What is an extraction shooter?

The embodiment of high-risk, high reward gameplay – extraction shooters challenge players to explore hostile environments, scavenge and escape, usually while facing both AI enemies and other players hunting the same rewards.

Unlike shooters that start players with the same kit every round, extraction shooters leave the preparation to you. Load up with your best equipment and you’ll have an easier time on the field, but a single defeat can cost everything you’ve brought with you.

This mix of high-stakes gunplay, and risk-reward tension is what sets the genre apart. Knowing when to push forward for greater loot vs when to bank what you’ve found by extracting is an essential skill. As a result, some extraction shooters offer a lower-stake option – a character or class built to drop in with nothing to lose but everything to gain. These are great for learning the ropes without risking your hard-earned gear.

Customize your Runner shell

By combining different cores and implants, you can dramatically change how your abilities function, how you move through the map, and how you approach combat. There are tons of powerful combinations to discover, and the very best Runners will theorycraft builds never before seen on Tau Ceti IV.

Cores

Cores are designed for specific Runner shells and focus on enhancing or modifying their unique abilities. Each core pushes a shell towards a particular playstyle, whether that’s increased mobility, stronger utility, or more effective combat options.

With Vandal, you might lean into a higher-mobility build focused on map traversal – turning your double jump into a triple jump. Or for Thief, buff your information gathering with an enhancement to your Pickpocket Drone which will periodically ping nearby threats.

Implants

Implants are universal upgrades that can be equipped by any Runner shell. They provide stat bonuses such as improved movement, survivability, or resource efficiency plus randomized perks that further shape your build.

Higher-tier implants also roll with powerful fixed perks. For example, some implants enhance reconnaissance tools, allowing pings or markers to remain active on enemies even after breaking line of sight.

Because implants aren’t tied to a specific shell, they’re flexible and highly valuable, allowing you to utilize their benefits on whichever shell you choose.

Developer's top tips

Get the most of out of your first run with 10 top tips from the development team at Bungie. 

  1. Everything makes noise. Moving, looting, activating exfils, opening doors, using items, healing, swapping weapons, and - of course - shooting things. If you think you got killed out of nowhere, someone probably found you through the noise you were making.
  2. Hover over contracts on the map screen for information on how to find their objectives.
  3. Bring plenty of ammo for your weapons; you aren’t going to find a lot mid-run. And remember: A better weapon is only an upgrade if you have bullets to shoot.
  4. You can freely swap cores, implants, and weapon mods both in and out of game. Something is always better than nothing so if you’ve got an empty slot, slam whatever you find.
  5. Depleted Patch Kits and Shield Charges don’t exfil with you, even for credits. Use them liberally and drop them at the end of the run to make space for other loot!
  1. Smart Heal (tap ‘Down’ on D-Pad) automatically uses the most effective item for the situation you’re in. You can manually use specific items by holding ‘Down’ on the D-Pad Down and selecting from a radial.
  2. The Equipment radial (holding ‘Left’ on D-Pad) lets you use grenades, ammo crates and other deployables regardless of which one you have currently equipped.
  3. If you’re not comfortable talking in voice chat, use the Comms radial (hold ‘Up’ on D-Pad) to send pre-set messages.
  4. Data cards grant credits to your entire crew. No need to fight over them. You also get the credits immediately; no need to exfil!
  5. Any item labeled as a ‘Valuable’ will auto-sell for credits (and sometimes faction reputation) upon exfil and has no in-run utility. Some Codex entries ask you to find certain Valuables to progress.
