Transfer or dispose of your PlayStation console

Before you replace, transfer, or dispose of your PlayStation®5 console or PlayStation®4 console, be sure to back up your data and reset your console.

Follow the steps below to save your data, erase any of your information, and restore the console to the factory settings.

Record your console serial number

Record the serial number and store it somewhere safe. This information could be useful in the future to prove your identity or ownership. 

Remove any USB devices or discs from your console

Remove anything from the console that you want to keep.

Back up your games, save data, and captures 

There are several ways you can store your console data.

  • Create a backup file of your console data.
  • Upload your saved data to the cloud
  • Store your data on a USB drive or USB extended storage

Transfer data from your PS4/PS5 console to another console

Sync your trophies

To make sure you don’t lose any trophy data, manually sync your trophy data.

Remove your PS5 console M.2 SSD 

If you installed an M.2 SSD and want to keep it, make sure to remove it. Save your game data in M.2 SSD storage.

Restore your console to factory settings

When you reset your PS5 console or initialize your PS4 console, all settings and information saved on the PS4 console are deleted. This process cannot be undone, so be sure not to delete any important data by mistake. Deleted data cannot be restored.

  1. Go to the home screen and select Settings > System > System Software > Reset Options
  2. Select Reset Your Console.
    To recover your pre-installed game “ASTRO's PLAYROOM”, download it from PlayStation Store.
  1. Go to Settings > Initialization.  
  2. Select Initialize PS4 > Full.

How can I transfer my subscription to a new console?
When you sign in to PlayStation Network on a new console, your subscriptions are applied to your account.

Can I remove my internal HDD and put it into a new PS4 console?
No. If you move your PS4 console’s internal HDD and install it in another console, the HDD will be reformatted, which will delete all data on it.
