Important

Age verification will be required later in 2026 for UK adult accounts to access certain features. If you’re prompted, we recommend completing age verification to avoid interruptions later in 2026.

We use age verification to deliver the best PlayStation experience for your age and to help protect our younger users. 

If you have not completed age verification, you can continue playing on PlayStation but communication features won’t be available until you do.

Overview 

Age verification is a process that helps confirm you’re old enough for an adult account for PlayStation in the UK. We use an age verification service to help deliver an age-appropriate experience and support online safety. From time to time, we may roll-out improvements or additions to the current age verification process. When we do, we may ask for your consent again.

In line with local law and regulation, we are using age verification to deliver the best PlayStation experience for your age, and to help protect our younger users. 

Age verification applies to adult accounts registered in the UK. You only need to complete age verification once per account.

  • New adult accounts may be asked to verify during account creation
  • Existing adult accounts may be asked to verify when you try to use certain features (see “What happens if I don’t verify?”)

Beginning June 2026, if you have not completed age verification, you can continue playing on PlayStation, but some features won’t be available until you verify your age.

You may not be able to use:

  • Communication features on PlayStation (console, PS App and web)
  • Voice chat
  • Text chat / messaging
  • Joining parties or group sessions
  • Connected or third-party communication experiences
  • Discord voice chat 
  • Broadcasting and sharing features
  • Broadcasting gameplay to YouTube or Twitch

In-game UGC and communication features

Some games offer their own communication tools or user-generated content (UGC) features. If age verification is not completed, certain in-game features may also become unavailable, such as:

  • In-game chat or messaging
  • Sharing or uploading user-generated content

Because each title is designed differently, the specific features affected may vary by game. As titles update their implementations over time, additional in-game features may become restricted for users who have not verified their age.

You can verify your age by selecting a method that suits you in the age verification flow. You have several options for verification, including mobile number, facial scan, or ID. Verification methods are provided by our service provider, Yoti. 

Yoti is our secure age-verification service provider. Yoti’s age verification is used in industries including gaming, social media, and age-restricted e-commerce.

For the best experience, we recommend using the following:

  • Android: The latest version of Chrome
  • iOS: The latest version of Safari
  • Mac: The latest versions of Chrome or Safari
  • Windows: The latest versions of Chrome or Edge

Mobile phone age verification 

This verification relies on matching the information your mobile provider has on file for you. As long as you are the owner of the phone contract and your details match, you’ll be able to confirm your details.

Click on the “Resend Code” button and try again, or use another method. 

If you enter the wrong verification code, you will see an error screen that includes an option to send a new code to your phone. Request a new code and try again when you receive the new code via SMS. 

Facial Scan 

You’ll take a photo of your face in a well-lit area. Our service provider, Yoti, uses its proprietary technology to estimate your age using the geometry of your face. In some countries, this facial geometry data may be considered biometric data.

Yoti deletes your facial geometry data as soon as your verification is complete. PlayStation never collects, stores, or otherwise processes your facial geometry data. We receive only the result of the verification from Yoti. For more information about how Yoti’s facial estimation technology works, visit the Yoti website.

Please make sure that:

  • You are in a well-lit area and your face is evenly lit.
  • Your entire face is fully visible.
  • No other faces are visible.

You can take the photo using any of these devices. For best results, we advise using your mobile phone as this will take a better-quality picture.

ID age verification 

You need to take a photo of your passport, driving licence, or national ID. After you select your issuing country, you will see a list of accepted documents. 

Once you’ve scanned your ID, it can take between 3 and 6 minutes to confirm your identity.

If you don’t have an ID document, you won’t be able to confirm your age with this method. We suggest using other age verification methods instead.

If you’re having issues 

Even if you haven’t verified your age, you can still:

  • Play games and use non-communication features on your console/device or in games
  • Access and purchase on the PlayStation Store

If you select “Verify Age Later”, you can continue without verifying at that moment. However, you won’t be able to access features that require age verification until verification is completed. 

To avoid interruptions later, we recommend completing age verification now. 

Players under 18 need to use an account managed by a parent or guardian.

If an adult account was created for someone who is under 18, the account will need to be updated to the appropriate account type. A parent or guardian will be required to manage this process.
