How to troubleshoot your PS VR2 on PC

Find troubleshooting steps for your PlayStation®VR2 and PC adapter.

General troubleshooting steps for PS VR2 on PC

  1. Check your connections. Unplug all cables and then reconnect them, following the guide below. Make sure you’re using a cable that complies with DisplayPort™ 1.4 or higher. 
  1. Check that your PC meets the minimum requirements for PS VR2.
  1. Launch SteamVR™ and go to SteamVR > Settings > Developer tab > Enable Direct Mode.
  2. If possible, try using a different USB port to connect your PS VR2. 
  3. Open PlayStation®VR2 App and check your connection. 
  4. Make sure you’re using the latest drivers for your graphics card.
    If you experience issues with the latest drivers, please try going back to an earlier version.
  1. Turn off your headset and PC. Once they're both turned off, turn on your PC and then turn on your headset. Then launch SteamVR™, and try again.
  • If you've installed any unofficial PS VR2 drivers, please remove all PS VR2 devices, and uninstall any unofficial drivers. Then, uninstall and reinstall the PS VR2 App.

How to use an external Bluetooth adapter

If you're using a built-in Bluetooth® adapter and want to use an external Bluetooth® adapter, follow these steps.

  1. Disable the built-in Bluetooth® adapter from Device Manager.
  2. Connect the external Bluetooth® adapter.

Having connection issues while using a Bluetooth adapter?    

  • Install the latest Bluetooth® driver from the manufacturer's website if the manufacturer provides a Bluetooth driver.
  • Connect your external Bluetooth® adapter to a USB 2.0 port as far away as possible from the USB 3.0 port.
  • Try using USB 2.0 extension cable* to move the external Bluetooth adapter away from the PC and place it in a location with good visibility.
  • If you’re using an external Bluetooth® antenna, place it in a location with good visibility.
  • If you’re using multiple Bluetooth adapters from the same manufacturer within close range, try using one Bluetooth adapter.
If you're still having issues, please try the following.
  • Try restarting Windows.
  • Turn off the Bluetooth® adapter, wait a while, then turn it back on and try again.
  • Try reinstalling the Bluetooth adapter driver:
    1. Open Device Manager and uninstall the Bluetooth adapter driver.
    2. Shut down Windows. 
    3. After a few seconds, turn on your PC.
    4. Install the latest Bluetooth driver.
  • Uninstall the PS VR2 Sense™ controller driver and unused Bluetooth device drivers:
    1. Open Device Manager.
    2. Click View from the menu bar.
    3. Select Show hidden devices.
    4. Uninstall the PS VR2 Sense controller driver and unused Bluetooth device drivers.
      If you can’t delete the driver, enter Safe Mode and try again.
    5. Restart Windows and install the latest Bluetooth driver.

Having tracking issues while using PS VR2 Sense controller?  

  • Install the latest Bluetooth driver version from the manufacturer's website if the manufacturer provides a Bluetooth driver.
  • Connect your Bluetooth® adapter to a USB 2.0 port as far away as possible from the USB 3.0 port. 
  • Try using USB 2.0 extension cable* to move the Bluetooth adapter away from the PC and place it in a location with good visibility.
  • If you’re using an external Bluetooth® antenna, place it in a location with good visibility.
  • Make sure the PS VR2 Sense controller is charged. 
  • If you’ve paired your controller with a PlayStation®5 console, make sure the console is turned off.
  • Turn off other Bluetooth® devices. 
  • Make sure there are no obstructions between the controller and the Bluetooth® adapter.
  • If you're using WiFi, connect to the 5GHz band.

*Depending on the Bluetooth® adapter's compatibility, some products may not work. Operation is not guaranteed.

PC sleep mode issues?

If you put your PC into sleep mode during a SteamVR™ game, you may experience an error when resuming your game. 

  1. Turn off your PS VR2 and monitor. 
  2. Turn your monitor on.
  3. Turn on your PS VR2. 

We recommend that you do not put your PC into sleep mode when playing SteamVR™ games with PS VR2.

Image quality issues when using PS VR2 on PC?

  1. Check all connections are secure and make sure your PC meets the minimum requirements.
  1. Go to SteamVR > Settings
  2. Try lowering the image quality settings.
  3. Try turning off Motion Smoothing.

Headset tracking issues with PS VR2 on PC?

  1. Check all connections are secure and make sure your PC meets the minimum requirements.
  1. Turn off your headset.
  2. Close SteamVR™.
  3. Open the PlayStation®VR2 App and select Delete play area data.

Game crashes while using PS VR2 on PC?

  1. Try lowering the image quality setting in SteamVR™ settings.
  2. Try turning off motion smoothing in the SteamVR™ settings.

Error when starting SteamVR?

  1. Try the general troubleshooting steps.
  2. Start the PlayStation VR2 App and check the connection status. 
  3. If you see a message saying there is a problem with a connection, turn off the VR headset and then turn it back on.
  4. Try connecting the PC adapter to another USB port on your motherboard.
  5. If the error still appears, turn off your headset and PC. Then turn on your headset and PC, and try again.

Try using the AMD Cleanup Utility.

If you’re using an NVIDIA® graphics board and are experiencing problems with SteamVR™, performing a clean install of the NVIDIA® graphics board driver may resolve the issue.

Using an external graphics card?  

If you connect a PC monitor to the onboard DisplayPort™ and connect PS VR2 to an external graphics board, you may not be able to start some games.  

  • Connecting your PC monitor to an external graphics card may help.
  • Please note, PS VR2 does not support the use of HDMI-to-DisplayPort™ conversion adapters or USB Type-C-to-DisplayPort™ conversion adapters.

What do the lights on the PC Adapter mean? 

  • Solid white
    PC adapter is on, PS VR2 is connected and ready.
  • Solid red
    PC adapter is on, PS VR2 isn't connected.
  • Off
    PC adapter is off.

Missing VR controller buttons in your game?

Please note, some games may not correctly reflect VR controller buttons.
Please check the bindings in the settings in SteamVR™.

Issue with admin privileges for PlayStation VR2 App?

If you select No to admin permission when installing the PlayStation VR2 App, you won’t be able to continue the installation. 

  1. Close the PlayStation VR2 App and start it again. 
  2. Select Yes when you’re asked to enable admin permission for the Steam™ Client Service.

See-through view issue during play area setup?

If you’re using an AMD CPU and the screen turns black, or freezes during the play area set up, please try the following:

  1. Connect the PC adapter's USB cable to a USB 3.0 port.
  2. If you’re still having issues, please try a different USB 3.0 port.

Function button doesn't work during initial setup?

  • Please ensure that your PC meets the minimum requirements for PS VR2 on PC.

PS VR2 Sense controller update issue?

  • There may be an issue with the Bluetooth connection.
  • If you're still having issues, try connecting the PS VR2 Sense controller to your PC using a USB cable.

PS VR2 App fails to launch?

This issue can be caused by changing your graphics card.

  • Uninstall the previous GPU driver.
  • If you're still having issues, enabling the iGPU (integrated GPU) in the BIOS may also help resolve the problem.

"Check USB Connection" appears during the initial setup

  • Connect the PS VR2 PC adapter to a USB 3.0 port.
  • Connect the PS VR2 PC adapter directly to a USB 3.0 port.
  • Even when connected to a USB 3.0 port, there might be compatibility issues. Please try the following:
  1. Reconnect the PC adapter to the same USB 3.0 port.
  2. Try connecting the PC adapter to a different USB 3.0 port.
  3. Turn off the VR headset, reconnect the PC adapter to a USB 3.0 port, then turn on the VR headset.
