Oil and sand

Into the wilderness

A reluctant hero with an instinct for survival, Max wants nothing more than to leave the madness behind and find solace in the fabled Plains of Silence. Stripped of his prized V8 Interceptor by a roaming band of War Boys led by the villainous warlord Scaborous Scrotus, Max is beaten and left for dead in the parched deserts of the Great White.

Rescued by wasteland “blackfinger” Chumbucket – a hunchbacked mechanic with incredible talents for building four-wheeled wrecking machines from scrap – Max sets out on a journey to reach Gas Town to reclaim what is his and deal furious outback revenge on those who took it.

As the driver of Chumbucket’s Magnum Opus – a mighty vehicle capable of heavy customisation – Max will have to rid the Great White of savage War Boy parties on foot and from behind the wheel. Storming bases, destroying convoys, reclaiming scrap and fighting brutal Top Dog bosses for the control of the dusty territory, Max must make his way to Gas Town, and to the sacred Plains of Silence, one burning wreck at a time…

Hints and tips

Surviving in the Great White

Upgrade to survive

Scrap is the currency of the wastelands, and the more you collect, the more you can upgrade both Max and the mighty Magnum Opus.

  • The “jimmy bar” is a useful early upgrade for Max. Found in his “Tools” menu, it gives access to locked gates and boxes containing valuable scrap.
  • Upgrading the Magnum Opus’ harpoon is a wise move – not only can you pull down bigger, stronger Scarecrows and sniper nests, but it’s handy for taking out vehicles too.
  • The mysterious Griffa will appear in various locations – visit him to hone Max’s abilities using the tokens he’ll earn from various encounters.

All your base are belong to Max

Fight for territory

Each are of the map contains outposts of Scrotus’ minions, which can be vital supply links for Max – if he can claim rid them of War Boys and claim them for himself.

Each base has a primary objective – like destroying an oil well or blowing up gas tanks – which, when completed, puts the camp under Max’s control and adds scrap to his coffers on a regular basis.

But beware, these zones are heavily fortified with snipers, Molotov catapults and all kinds of enemy fighters, so pick your tactics carefully before sending Max into the fray.

Know your enemy

War Boys approach

Taking out motorised enemies and convoys quickly depends on knowing a vehicle’s weakness – and taking advantage of it. That could mean ripping its tyres off with the harpoon, blasting its oil tank with Max’s shotgun, or simply hitting the boosters and ramming it off a cliff.

Storms are brewing

Risk and reward

The wastelands are a dark, stormy place – and every so often, Max will get a storm warning advising him to take shelter.

While this is a wise move, bravery comes with big rewards and heading into the hurricane force dust storms in the Magnum Opus give Max the chance to snag huge chests full of scrap that have been carried on the wind. But beware – the gales also carry razor-sharp shrapnel that can cut Max down in an instant.

Up and away

Enjoy the view

Each section of the map has a balloon marker – and it’s a good idea to head for it whenever you uncover new territory. From there, you can get a birds-eye view of the outback and use Max’s binoculars to mark hostile camps, structures, Death Races and anything else you might need to find.

Not only that, but it’s a handy fast-travel marker for when you need to cross vast expanses of wasteland.
