10 things you might not know about Fortnite

Get started with the Fortnite universe and discover all the fun and exciting ways you can play

There's way more to Fortnite than Battle Royale

While its world-conquering success served as an inspiration for a whole genre of successful Battle Royale games, there’s now plenty to do in Fortnite beyond battling to be the last one standing.

New experiences bring racing, survival and rhythm-based music challenges to Fortnite. And those are just the things published by Epic Games — there are also creator-made experiences (“islands”) being published all the time!

Play for free across all of Fortnite

Across Fortnite’s different experiences, there’s a steady stream of updates that will keep you busy whatever you’re into.

Traditionally the Battle Royale Seasons have brought the biggest changes, with drastic additions to the map, and gameplay changes dropping every 70-100 days.

But you can now expect to see new Quests, rewards, and more across other Fortnite experiences all the time, like fresh tracks for Rocket Racing, more to construct in LEGO Fortnite, and new superstars drawing crowds in Fortnite Festival.

Enjoy new stuff all year round

Quite simply, you don’t have to spend a cent, penny, or V-Buck to play Fortnite.

There are often free rewards in Fortnite to work towards, and cosmetics don’t give anyone an unfair gameplay advantage, so you can always expect an even playing field.

You can be part of epic moments

Fortnite’s live events are a spectacle to behold, having ranged from a titanic showdown between a giant mech and a sea monster to a black hole wiping out the entire island.

These dramatic events often wrap up the current Chapter and become part of a grand Fortnite storyline.

Top of bill for the live events have been mind-bending performances from the industry's top performing artists – these events have ushered in a new era of Fortnite, launching LEGO Fortnite, Rocket Racing and Fortnite Festival.

Drop into Battle Royale and Zero Build with a friend in split-screen mode

Playing Battle Royale or Zero Build - Battle Royale? Have a blast together in Duos and Squads modes while playing on the same screen with one console. All you’ll need is a second DualSense® wireless controller plus a free Epic account for your player two and you’re all set.

Make sure your teamwork is on point and that Duos Victory Royale will be yours in no time.

And just be sure you’re watching your partner’s back when you say you are… they can see your screen after all.

Cross-play with your friends, wherever they're playing

Getting a group of friends together in the same place (virtually or physically) is no easy feat. Fortunately, Fortnite enables friends to jump into any of its experiences whether they’re playing on PS5, Xbox Series X, PS4, Xbox One, PC, Switch, or mobile.

Play as your favourite pop-culture icons

Pop culture crossovers go hand-in-hand with Fortnite and over the years we’ve seen a surprisingly varied array of collaborations with purchasable Outfits, from John Cena to Bruno Mars to Star Wars.

These cameos usually include purchasable Outfits and other cosmetics so you can style your character as your favourite super-hero, streamer, or videogame star. Coordinating Outfits with friends is incredibly satisfying too.

Fortnite Festival is of course where you’ll find superstars like Lady Gaga and Billie Eilish, plus unlockable Jam Tracks and Instruments to go along with them.

You’ll often find new gameplay mechanics with these crossovers too, like helping the Rebellion against the Galactic Empire in LEGO Fortnite.

Cosmetic items often carry between experiences

So, you’ve worked hard to unlock a sweet new Outfit , the good news is you’ll be able to use it across many Fortnite experiences via your in-game Locker.

LEGO Styles of Outfits are automatically unlocked too, and these are constantly being expanded to cover the back catalogue of Fortnite Outfits .

Some items are specific to certain experiences, for example LEGO Builds can only be used in LEGO Fortnite and Gliders can only be used in Battle Royale or eligible creator-made islands.

Not only are there items that can be shared within Fortnite, but with “cross-game ownership,” you can share certain Car items across Fortnite and Rocket League! These include several Car Bodies like Jäger 619, Endo, and Octane.

Build your own experiences with Fortnite Creative

It’s your island, and your rules. Fortnite Creative is a toolset where creators can get inventive and build experiences (“islands”) for others to play.

There are a range of templates, Prefab buildings and props to get you started as a newcomer. You can also give friends permission to edit an island you’ve created, letting you work together to build something special.

More of a player than a creator? Scanning through the lists of player-created islands, you’ll see escape rooms, horror mysteries, fashion shows, endless runners, and combat-focused showdowns. Some of these are built with Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), a toolset on PC that’s more advanced.

Collect hundreds of cosmetics

Express yourself with thousands of cosmetic items, including Outfits, Back Blings, Gliders, Emotes and more. There’s a huge range to collect either through the Battle Pass, Item Shop, Quests, or other means. All items you acquire on your Fortnite account are visible in your Fortnite Locker.

Certain Outfits also have “reactivity” – various Midas Outfits have the Golden Touch ability, which turns every item he touches into gold. With her built-in Emote, X-Men’s Mystique is able to shapeshift into the Outfit  of the last player you’ve eliminated.
