How to set up HDR on PS4 consoles

PlayStation®4 consoles support High Dynamic Range (HDR) video output for gameplay and video streaming. Find out how to set up HDR to enjoy greater detail and depth of color. 

How to enable HDR on PS4 consoles

  1. Check the owner’s manual for your TV to find which HDMI port supports HDR content.
  2. Access the TV settings and make sure that the TV’s HDMI ports are set to enable HDR content. TV manufacturers refer to HDR in a number of different ways:
    HDR, Wide Color Mode, HDMI Enhanced Mode, UHD Color Mode, Ultra HD Premium, Ultra HD deep color.
  3. Using a Premium HDMI cable, connect the PS4™ console to the correct HDMI port. Please note, the console must be connected directly to the TV to output HDR. It can’t be connected to a receiver or switch box.  
  4. On your PS4 console go to Settings > Sound and Screen > Video Output Settings.
  5. In the Video Output Settings menu, set the HDR and Deep Color output settings to Automatic.
  6. For video streaming applications, check the content is HDR enabled. Most applications will have an indicator icon.

PS4 console HDR requirements

To properly enjoy HDR features on your PS4 console, please ensure you have the following:

  • 2K or 4K HDR-capable TV that supports the HDR10 format.
  • PS4 console connected with a Premium HDMI cable.
  • HDR-enabled content such as a game title or streaming video service (HDR setting may need to be enabled in the in-app menu).
  • PS4 console updated to system software 7.0 or later.

Does my TV support HDR?

  1. On your PS4 console, go to Settings > Sound and Screen > Video Output Settings > Video Output Information.
  2. If your display supports HDR, you will see “Supported” under the HDR label.

How to adjust PS4 console HDR settings

You can adjust the settings on your PS4 console using the HDR calibration option:

  1. On your PS4 console go to Settings > Sound and Screen > Video Output Settings.
  2. In the Video Output Settings menu, select Adjust HDR, and follow the on-screen instructions.
