How to manage storage space on your PS5 console

Learn how to free up space on your PlayStation®5 console storage, store games on USB extended storage, and move saved data using PlayStation®Plus cloud storage.

How to use storage locations on your PS5 console

Game and saved data, as well as other data, is stored on the built-in storage of your PS5® console. If you don't have room on your console storage, you can either delete data that's already there or move data to one of the following storage spaces:

Type of data  USB extended storage   M.2 SSD storage   Cloud storage*2  USB drive
Game data (PS5 games) ✓*1 - -
Game data (PS4 games) - -
Saved data (PS5 games) - - -
Saved data (PS4 games) - -
Screenshots and video clips - - -*3 ✓*4

*1 To play PS5 games, you need to move game data from your USB extended storage drive back to your PS5 console storage or M.2 SSD storage.

*2 If you want to use Cloud storage, you need to subscribe to PlayStation Plus.

*3 You can share your screenshots and game clips through PlayStation®App.

*4 You can only copy screenshots and video clips to a USB drive. Media can't be copied from the USB drive to your console storage.

You can format a commercially available USB drive as USB extended storage and use it with your PS5 console.

You can install a commercially available M.2 SSD (that meets the required specifications) onto your PS5 console.

PlayStation Plus members can use storage in the cloud.

You can use a commercially available USB drive that's formatted to FAT or exFAT (but not as USB extended storage) to store files like screenshots and PlayStation®4 saved data. Not all devices work with your console.

How to check your storage space on PS5 consoles

Your PS5 console monitors how much storage space is used by your games, media content, and saved data. To check how much free storage space you have, go to the home screen and select Settings > Storage.

To free up your storage space, delete existing data, or move data to a different location:

If you don't want to delete the existing games in your PS5 console storage, you can move them to USB extended storage.

If you don't want to delete the existing games in your PS5 console storage, you can move them to the M.2 SSD storage.

Don't worry, you won't lose access to any deleted games or applications — you can re-download your purchases from your game library whenever you like.

  1. Go to Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps.
  2. Choose the data you want to get rid of, and select Delete.
  • When a game has Customize next to its title, you can select and manage portions of the game data. For example, if there are add-ons you don't use or parts of a game that you've already finished, you can delete the data and still play the rest of the game.
  • You can also manage PS5 console storage by linking your PS5 console to PlayStation®App on your iOS or Android device.
