PS4: 2-Step Verification

Learn about the security benefits of 2-step verification on PlayStation 4.

What is 2-Step Verification?

With 2-step verification (2SV), you can add an extra layer of security to your gaming experience.

When signing in on a PS4 system with 2SV activated, a player will be asked to:

  1. Enter their account password and Sign-in ID (email address).
  2. Enter the verification code that was sent to the account’s registered mobile phone number*.

Accounts will usually remain signed in, even when the PS4 system is switched off. However, you will be sent a verification code if:

  • you are signing in for the first time after switching on 2SV,
  • you manually sign out of your PS4 and want to sign back in,
  • you reset your account password,
  • you change your Sign-in ID (email address),
  • you are signing in to your account on a friend’s PS4 system.

* The verification code is valid for 10 minutes after your sign-in attempt. If your code has expired select [Resend Code] from the sign-in screen to receive a new code.

How do I activate 2SV on my PS4 system?

You will need:

  • Your account sign-in ID (email address) and password.
  • A mobile phone on which you can receive text messages and access the internet.
  1. Go to  [Settings] > [Account Management] > [Account Information] > [Security] > [2-Step Verification] > [Set Up Now].

  2. Carefully enter your mobile number and select [Add].

  3. You will receive a verification code by text — enter the code into the PS4 verification section to authorise your mobile number.

  4. Select [Activate] to switch on 2SV.
Please make sure to store your 10  backup codes in a safe place in case of future sign-in issues. Go to  [Settings] > [Account Management] > [Account Information] > [Security] > [Two-Step Verification] > [Backup Codes] to find them.

How can I update my mobile number?

You can add up to two mobile numbers to your account — only one of these numbers can receive 2SV texts. To update the 2SV mobile number first deactivate 2SV, then reactivate 2SV entering your desired 2SV mobile number in the process.
