    Why should I play Birdie?

With a history that dates back to the original Street Fighter, Birdie’s appearance has changed dramatically over the years. He’s gone from being a muscular brute in the Alpha series to a beer bellied glutton in Street Fighter V.

    Tips & Tricks

Birdie has a lot of tools for dealing with fireball spammers. He can dive under them with his Bull Diver, catch his opponent mid-recovery with his Hanging Chain and dive right over them with his EX Killing Head.

V-Skill: Break, Banana & Drink Time

    V-Trigger: Enjoy Time

Birdie’s V-Skill has three variations. He can throw a banana or drink can on the ground to trip his opponent, or build his V-Gauge by eating a doughnut. His V-Trigger takes this one step further by eating a chilli pepper to increase his damage output.

Why should I play as Birdie?

With five special moves, an armoured normal attack, far-reaching normal strikes and a versatile V-Skill under his hefty belt, Birdie isn’t lacking in options. He’s perfect for those players who like a bit of everything.

    Who is Cammy?

Once a mindless doll under the control of Shadaloo, Cammy broke free of her brainwashing and joined a Special Forces unit called Delta Red. Her former codename was Killer Bee. She also has a fondness for cats.

    Tips & Tricks

One of Cammy’s most important moves is her Cannon Strike dive kick. To pull it off effectively, you need to land it so it’s safe on block. Connect it too high and your opponent can punish you.

    V-Skill: Axel Spin Knuckle

    V-Trigger: Delta Drive

Cammy’s V-Skill lets her slip past fireballs from a distance and switch sides with an opponent at close range. Her V-Trigger changes the properties of her special moves resulting in lengthier and more damaging combos.

Why should I play as Cammy?

With no fireball or command grab to speak of, Cammy is all about smothering opponents and fishing for counter hits. Once she’s found her way in, she tends to dominate the round quickly.

    Who is Chun-Li?

As the first lady of Street Fighter, Chun-Li is widely regarded as the strongest woman in the world. She’s an agent for Interpol and is hell-bent on bringing both M. Bison and Shadaloo to justice.

    Tips & Tricks

Like most characters in the game, Chun-Li has a range of anti-air options. Standing light kick, back heavy kick and EX Spinning Bird Kick are all viable from certain ranges. Plus if you really have a read on your opponent, her air throw can work wonders.

    V-Skill: Rankyaku

    V-Trigger: Renkiko

Chun-Li’s V-Skill is a low angled jump that knocks her opponents into a juggle state when close. Her V-Trigger dramatically improves her combo potential by adding multiple hits to her normal attacks.

Why should I play as Chun-Li?

In just about every Street Fighter game she’s appeared in, Chun-Li has been the queen of buttons. This is no different in Street Fighter V, as she can pester her opponent with relentless pokes before switching into her Critical Art Lightning Legs attack.

    Who is Dhalsim?

As one of the two most outlandish characters introduced in Street Fighter II, Dhalsim is a yoga master who can breathe fire and stretch his limbs at will. He’s always been one of the series’ more senior characters, as evidenced by his new white beard.

    Tips & Tricks

Dhalsim’s fireball follows an arching trajectory that protects the space above his head. Combine this with his far reaching normal attacks and you have all the tools to stay one step ahead of the opposition.

    V-Skill: Yoga Float

    V-Trigger: Yoga Burner

Dhalsim’s V-Skill lets you control the direction he moves in as he floats in the air. His V-Trigger projects a carpet of flames that gradually causes recoverable damage to his opponent.

Why should I play as Dhalsim?

Traditionally seen as an effective distance attack character, this new and improved Dhalsim is tailored towards a more hit-and-run approach. If you can gain the lead at the start of the match, Dhalsim is one of the more frustrating characters to fight against.

    Who is F.A.N.G?

Rounding off the quartet of new combatants in Street Fighter V is F.A.N.G. This assassin works for Shadaloo as M. Bison’s second in command.

    Tips & Tricks

Poison may be F.A.N.G’s calling card, but his far-reaching normal attacks and evasive sidestep are equally important. He’s second only to Dhalsim when it comes to keeping opponents at arm’s length.

    V-Skill: Nishodoku

    V-Trigger: Dokunomu

F.A.N.G’s V-Skill produces a low moving projectile that cannot be blocked and poisons opponents on contact. His V-Trigger takes this one step further by creating a cloud of toxins around him. If the opponent moves near him, they instantly become poisoned.

Who should I play as F.A.N.G?

Every new Street Fighter game needs at least one outlandish character that flips the script in terms of appearance and play style. For Street Fighter V, that character is most definitely F.A.N.G.

    Who is Karin?

As a top contender for the wealthiest fighter in the Street Fighter universe, Karin Kanzuki is understandably snobbish. She also counts the likes of Sakura, Ken and R. Mika among her rivals.

    Tips & Tricks

Karin's ability to juggle her opponents in the air is one of the most potent in the game. If you can land her Tenko uppercut against an opponent cleanly, you can follow up with everything from her Mujinkyaku kicks to her Critical Art.

    V-Skill: Meioken

    V-Trigger: Kanzuki-ryu Guren no Kata

Karin's V-Skill is a chargeable open palm strike that can negate fireballs. Her V-Trigger unlocks her Guren special move and its wide range of follow-ups.

Why should I play as Karin?

As one of the more rushdown focused characters in the game, Karin shines when played with a sense of urgency. Even if your opponent blocks the brunt of her barrage, all it takes is one stray hit to cancel into her V-Trigger for huge damage.

    Who is Ken?

Heir to the Masters family fortune, Ken is a flamoyant fighter who learned the art of Ansatsuken from Gouken. He also grew up alongside Ryu, a man he considers both his best friend and ultimate rival.

    Tips & Tricks

Ken's EX Hurricane Kick now functions similarly to a dive kick. If you time it just as your opponent throws a fireball, you can tag them before they have time to recover.

    V-Skill: Quick Step

    V-Trigger: Heat Rush

Ken's V-Skill lets him run forwards to close the gap between him and his opponent. His V-Trigger functions both as a damage booster and combo extender.

Why should I play as Ken?

Effective Ken play is all about staying on top of the opponent and forcing them to fear his options. His fireball isn't as useful as Nash or Ryu's due to it's hefty recovery time, but he makes up for it with his forward momentum and Crush Counter conversions.

    Who is Laura?

Laura is a brand new to the Street Fighter series and the older sister of Sean from Street Fighter III.

    Tips & Tricks

To play Laura effectively, you have to set up her command dash with her potent normal attacks. Then, once you're within throwing range, you need to keep your opponent guessing with frame traps and resets.

    V-Skill: Linear Movement

    V-Trigger: Spark Show

Laura's V-Skill lets her cancel her normal attacks into a forward or back dash. Her V-Trigger increases the range of her command dashes, decreases the charge time of her fireball and - similarly to Ryu - maximises her stun output.

Why should I play as Laura?

As one of the more technical characters in the game, Laura needs an in-depth understanding of advanced techniques to bag the win. But in the hands of a pro, her pressure can be terrifying.

    Who is M. Bison?

If there’s one character in the Street Fighter universe that can be described as pure evil, it has to be M. Bison. Brainwashing, human experimentation and remorseless murder, there’s nothing this dictator won’t do to fulfil his ambitions.

    Tips & Tricks

    M. Bison’s most iconic move, the Psycho Crusher, is now only available as a Critical Art. In its place, the new Psycho Inferno works as a spacing tool that can be cancelled into both his V-Trigger and Critical Art for big damage.

    V-Skill: Psycho Reflect

    V-Trigger: Psycho Power

    M. Bison’s V-Skill lets him catch fireballs out of the air. He can then absorb them to build his metre or throw one back of his own. His V-Trigger lets him combo his special moves into each other.

Why should I play as M. Bison?

Put simply, M. Bison is the Street Fighter boss that everyone remembers. He may be sporting a few grey hairs these days, with a walk speed that’s best described as sluggish, but he still hits like a runaway freight train.

    Who is Nash?

Written off as dead after the events of the Street Fighter Alpha series, Nash makes an unexpected return in Street Fighter V. His Frankenstein’s monster-esque appearance suggests he’s not the harbinger of justice we once knew…

    Tips & Tricks

Nash has more normal attack variations than any other character in the game. Once you learn the application of each one, he becomes a fortress of attacks that’s tricky to breach.

    V-Skill: Bullet Clear

    V-Trigger: Sonic Move

Nash’s V-Skill lets him absorb projectiles to build his V-Gauge. His V-Trigger is a nifty teleport that lets him escape pressure, extend combos and generally confuse his opponents.

Why should I play as Nash?

If you like the idea of pinning your opponent down with one of the best fireballs in the game, Nash should be top of your list. He’s also the only character in the game who can steal his opponents’ Critical Gauge.

    Who is Necalli?

As one of the four new characters introduced in Street Fighter V, much of Necalli’s past is shrouded in mystery. His fighting style is best described as animalistic, due to his feral slashes and stomps.

    Tips & Tricks

Similar to Ryu, Necalli is a good starting point for new players. He shuts down fireball pressure easily with his Disc’s Guidance special move. He also benefits from an overhead attack that can lead to a Crush Counter.

    V-Skill: Culminated Power

    V-Trigger: Torrent of Power

Necalli’s V-Skill lets him create mini-earthquakes by slamming the ground with his fists. His V-Trigger lets him unleash his inner power by releasing the shackles on his dreadlocks. This increases his mobility and overall damage.

Why should I play as Necalli?

Necalli is the type of character that needs to be played up-close and personal. If you can close the gap and land one of his heavy punches, his damage output – even when his V-Gauge meter is low – is one of the highest in the game.

    Who is R. Mika?

First appearing in Street Fighter Alpha 3, Rainbow Mika is a pro wrestler who idolises Zangief. Many of her special moves are exaggerated versions of real-life wrestling techniques.

    Tips & Tricks

Mika’s Passion Press target combo lets her force her opponent into a corner. From here, she can apply her deadly mix-ups to keep her foe guessing as she increases the pressure.

    V-Skill: Mic Performance

    V-Trigger: Nadeshiko

Mika’s V-Skill gives her one hit of armour while she performs a speech on her microphone. It also increases the damage dealt by her next command grab. Her V-Trigger tags in her wrestling partner, Yamato Nadeshiko, to apply pressure and extend combos.

Why should I play as R. Mika?

Like most grappling characters, Mika must make her opponent fearful of her command grabs without relying on them too heavily. If you like the idea of stalking opponents and then punishing them heavily for the slightest mistake, then Mika is definitely worth considering.

    Who is Rashid?

Much like Dee Jay before him, Rashid is an enthusiastic fighter who's rarely seen without a smile on his face. He's also something of a gadget lover, as can be seen by the tornado-firing rucksack he carries on his back.

    Tips & Tricks

Rashid has an unusual fireball that moves in an upward trajectory. This makes jumping in on him risky because if the fireball connects in the air he can follow up with his Eagle Spike dive kick.

    V-Skill: Front Flip/Rolling Assault

    V-Trigger: Ysaar

Rashid's V-Skills let him flip through the air and roll under fireballs. His V-Trigger creates a slow-moving tornado that can extend combos, pin oponents down and make some of his speical moves safer.

Why should I play as Rashid?

With his forward run, wall jumps, Spinning Mixer and evasive V-Reversal, Rashid is one of the more unorthodox characters in the game. If you like laying the smackdown in style, there really is no other choice.

    Who is Ryu?

By travelling the world to improve his fighting ability, Ryu is the embodiment of the world warrior spirit. He's been the poster boy of the Street Fighter series since its inception.

    Tips & Tricks

Throwing out a Dragon Punch always going to be risky, especially with the new Counter system. But if the opponent is applying the pressure, the medium Dragon Punch is the way to go - it's the only one with invincibility.

    V-Skill: Mind's Eye

    V-Trigger: Denjin Renki

Ryu's V-SKill lets him parry any attack that isn't a throw. His V-Trigger increases the amount of stun he inflicts. It also makes his fireball chargeable and changes the properties of his Critical Art.

Why should I play as Ryu?

Ryu is the cornerstone on which all Street Fighter games are built. He's an excellent starting point for new players and an absolute terror in the hands of a master.

    Who is Vega?

As perhaps the most narcissistic man in the Street Fighter universe, Vega dresses like a matador but fights like a ninja. He cares only for beauty and despises anyone he considers ugly.

    Tips & Tricks

Vega has access to two stances - clawed and clawless. The former is best used for match-ups where outranging an opponent is your top priority. Vega's clawless stance trades range for increased combo potential and an in-your-face command grab.

    V-Skill: Matador Turn

    V-Trigger: Bloody Kiss

Vega's V-Skill lets him evade an attack - such as a fireball - before lashing out with his signature claw. His V-Trigger lets him throw a rose from the ground or the air and, if it successfully connects, Vega will dive towards his opponent for a follow-up attack.

Why should I play as Vega?

When it comes to mobility, Vega is the most nimble character in the game. He can frustrate opponents in to overcommitting with his mid-range pokes and then capitalise on their mistakes with his versatile Critical Art.

    Who is Zangief?

Known as the Red Cyclone in his native Russia, Zangief is a living mountain of muscle who wrestles bears for fun. He first appeared in Street Fighter II with his signature spinning pile driver.

    Tips & Tricks

Before you can start landing Zangief's trio of command grabs, you have to make the opponent fear his normal attacks. The standing headbutt, in particular, is great for beating normal attacksand comboing into big damage.

    V-Skill: Iron Muscle

    V-Trigger: Cyclone Lariat

Zangief's V-Skills let him absorb two attacks with being knocked back. His V-Trigger sucks opponents towards him and makes his V-Skill even more potent.

Why should I play as Zangief?

Tied with Birdie for the most health in the game, Zangief can afford to take a few hits as he tries to lock opponents down. He may have lost his Banishing Flat (Green Hand) special move from Street Fighter IV, but his new Borscht Dynamite air grab lets him defend the skies like never before.
