PlayStation Remote Play on mobile devices

With PS Remote Play app, you can control your PlayStation® console remotely wherever you have a high-speed internet connection.

How to set up PS Remote Play on mobile devices

Using the PS Remote Play app, you can control your PlayStation®5 console or PlayStation®4 console from a mobile phone or tablet. Check that your devices meet the requirements and then follow the steps below to set up PS Remote Play.

You’ll need the following to use PS Remote Play:

  • Android™ smartphone or tablet, iPhone, or iPad
    For details about system requirements, go to Google Play™ or the App Store.
  • PS5® console or PS4® console
    Always update your console to the latest version of the system software.
  • An account for PlayStation™Network
    Use the same account that you use for your console. If you don’t have an account, you’ll need to create one first.
  • High-speed internet connection
    As a standard, we recommend a high-speed connection with upload and download speeds of at least 5 Mbps. For best performance, we recommend a high-speed connection with upload and download speeds of at least 15 Mbps.
  • You can connect a DualSense® wireless controller or DUALSHOCK®4 wireless controller to supported mobile devices for use with PS Remote Play. 
  • To use voice chat, you'll need a microphone, such as the built-in microphone on your mobile device.
  • Remote Play uses a lot more data than most video streaming services. If you're using Remote Play with mobile data, be careful not to exceed your data cap or run up a large mobile phone bill.

How to install the PS Remote Play app on your device

From Google Play™ or the App Store, download and install PS Remote Play on your mobile device. You can use the same app to connect to your PS5 console and PS4 console. You'll only need to do these steps the first time you use the app.

How to set up your PS5 console for PS Remote Play

You'll only need to do this the first time you use PS Remote Play: 

  1. From the home screen, select Settings System Remote Play, and then turn on Enable Remote Play
  2. To start PS Remote Play while your PS5 console is in rest mode, select Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Then select the checkboxes for Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.

You’ll only need to do this the first time you use PS Remote Play: 

  1. From the function screen, go to Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings, and then turn on Enable Remote Play
  2. From the function screen, go to Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PS4, and then select Activate. You can enable this setting on only one PS4 console for each account. 
  3. To start PS Remote Play while your PS4 console is in rest mode, select Settings > Power Save Settings > Set Features Available in Rest Mode. Then turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS4 from Network.

How to prepare your mobile device for Remote Play  

To use mobile data for Remote Play, you'll need to set up your mobile device. Depending on your carrier and network conditions, you might not be able to use mobile data for Remote Play.

If your device is connected to Wi-Fi®, you'll continue to use Wi-Fi when you start Remote Play.

  1. Launch PS Remote Play on your mobile device, and then select Sign In to PSN.
  2. Sign in with the same account that you use for your console.
  3. Select Settings at the upper right corner of the screen, and then select Mobile Data > Use Mobile Data.
  4. Select OK.

How to start PS Remote Play from your mobile device

You'll take the following steps each time you connect to your PS5 console or PS4 console from your mobile device.

  1. Turn on your console or put it into rest mode. 
  2. Launch PS Remote Play on your mobile device, and then select Sign In to PSN
    Sign in with the same account that you use for your console. 
  3. Select PS5 or PS4.
    The app searches for the console that you’ve signed in to using your account, and then connects to the console automatically. After it connects, the screen of your console displays on your mobile device and you can start using PS Remote Play. If multiple consoles are found, select the console that you'd like to use. 

From the second time onwards, you'll be able to select the console that you connected to previously.

  • Your mobile device won't be able to search and connect to your console if it's been a while since you last signed in. Before trying to connect remotely from outside your home, check that your device connects properly while you're near your console.
  • During Remote Play, you may see "Remote Play connected." at the top of your screen. This message appears when another user logs into your PS5 console while you're using Remote Play. When that user logs out of your PS5 console, the message disappears.

PS Remote Play controls on mobile devices

If you tap on the screen of your mobile device during PS Remote Play, the controller buttons display. If you're using an Android™ smartphone or tablet, button and icon designs may vary.

If you select options, the control panel displays.

  • Settings
    Change settings such as screen orientation and how the controller buttons display. The control panel is also where you'll quit PS Remote Play.
  • Create button
    Perform the same functions as the controller's create button.
  • PS button
    Display the control center of your PS5 console.
  • Microphone status
    Select Mic on / Mic off to turn the microphone on or off.
  • Options button
    Perform the same functions as the controller's options button.
  • Close
    Close the control panel.

If you select options, the control panel displays.

You can perform the following actions from the control panel:

  • Settings
    Change settings such as screen orientation and how the controller buttons display. The control panel is also where you'll quit PS Remote Play.
  • SHARE button
    Perform the same functions as the controller's SHARE button.
  • PS button
    Display the home screen of your PS4 console.
  • Microphone status
    Select Mic on / Mic off to turn the microphone on or off.
  • OPTIONS button
    Perform the same functions as the controller's OPTIONS button.
  • Close
    Close the control panel.

You can also connect your controller to a compatible device to use with PS Remote Play.

How to play PS Remote Play in the background

You can pause your PS Remote Play session to do other things on your phone or tablet before returning to the action.

When playing a game on PS Remote Play, press the P-in-P button. The PS Remote Play session opens in a new window and you can quickly access another app without ending your stream.    

To keep streaming PS Remote Play sessions when you minimize the PS Remote Play app, you need to enable background streaming:  

  1. Open the PS Remote Play app and select Settings.
  2. Enable Background Streaming.    

This setting is disabled by default. With this setting enabled, you can return to the home screen or another application and your stream will continue for up to 5 minutes.

How to quit PS Remote Play

  1. Tap on the screen during PS Remote Play.
    The controller buttons display.
  2. On the bottom right corner of the screen, select options.
    The control panel for Remote Play displays.
  3. Select Settings, and then select Disconnect.
    You’ll see a message that says "This Remote Play session will be disconnected".
  4. To quit PS Remote Play while your console is in rest mode, select the checkbox for Put the connected console in rest mode.
  5. Select OK.
    PS Remote Play quits and the screen returns to its original state before your mobile device was connected to your console.
