Renting a PlayStation Video

Restrictions and conditions for renting a video.

With PlayStation Video you have the choice to either buy or rent videos. Both options are generally available in High Definition or Standard Definition.

When renting or buying a video, the following restrictions apply in addition to any and all restrictions included in the Terms of Use:

  • Renting on PS Video

    • When you decide to rent a video it is streamed or downloaded directly to your compatible device
    • The video must be watched within 30 days of payment.
    • Once the viewing has been started, you have 24, 48 hours or 72 hours to finish watching it. This rental period can differ depending on the title. Please refer to the video detail page for this information.
    • You can pause, stop and start your video as often as you like during the rental period, unless the 30-day limit is reached within that time.
    • You can start playback on one Sony device and later resume playback on a different Sony device — unless you download the rented video, in which case it is bound to that device.
    • Once playback has started, the title cannot be rented on that account again until the end of the current rental period.
    • If you rent an HD video and download it in SD, you will only be able to watch it in SD.
  • Buying from PS Video

    • You cannot watch a video on a device that has not been registered to your SEN account. For more information, please visit the device activation page.
    • You can stream or download purchased content from your My Videos library to compatible devices.
    • There is no limit on how many times you can watch the video or on how long you have to watch it.
    • You can only stream 1 video at a time per account.

A record of any rental or purchase is saved to your account and can be viewed under your Transaction History.

The PlayStation Video service will no longer be available on PS3 systems from 15/05/18. Content that you have already purchased on PS3 will remain playable from PS3 My Videos until the end of the respective entitlement window. Movie and TV show content purchases made on other PlayStation platforms will not be playable via your PS3.

You can pause and resume playback of a video as many times as you like, but there are some restrictions to consider before you start watching your video.

When renting a video the following restrictions apply, in addition to any and all restrictions included in the Terms of Service at www.playstation.com/legal/PSNTerms.

  • The video must be watched within 30 days of payment.
  • Once viewing has been started you have 24, 48 or 72 hours to finish watching it. This rental period can differ depending on the title. Please refer to the video title detail page to check.
  • You can pause, stop and start your video as often as you like during the rental period (24, 48 or 72 hours, depending on the title) unless the 30 day limit is reached within that time.
  • If you have begun to download a rented video to a device, you cannot re-download it to any device whether you have begun playback on a downloaded copy or not. You need to rent the video again if you wish to download to another device.
  • If you rent an HD video and download it in SD you will only be able to watch it in SD.
  • Some devices do not support HD playback. To see which devices support HD please see the table above for more information.
  • You can stream a video rented on your PSN account on one device at any one time. If you start playback of any video on a second device, playback on the first device will stop.
Please note, in certain circumstances, a video may have to be removed from PlayStation Video. In these cases, videos that you have purchased may become unavailable to download and/or stream. This will not affect purchased or rented videos that you have already downloaded. As a result, wherever possible, you should download purchased and rented videos immediately after purchase to all compatible devices on which you would like to have a copy.
