What to do when a sub account holder reaches 18

This article explains how to upgrade a sub account to a master account.

When a sub account holder reaches the age of 18, their account does not automatically become an independent master account. Any purchases continue to be funded from the master account as the sub account does not have a wallet attached to it and Parental Controls can only be changed from the master account.

About upgrading a sub account

The sub account holder has the option to upgrade their account to a master account once they reach 18. This means that they can take advantage of all of the features of a master account including all Playstation Network social features and adding their own card details. Friends list, trophies and purchases made on the sub account transfer to the new master account.

Please note the following before upgrading your sub account:

  • Sub accounts can be upgraded using a web browser or PlayStation App.
  • Sub accounts cannot be upgraded through Account Management on PlayStation systems.
  • Upgrade to master account is permanent. The account cannot be changed back to a sub account.
  • The master account to which the sub account is linked cannot stop a sub account from upgrading.
  • Parental controls will no longer be active once the sub account has been upgraded.
  • Any pre-orders placed by the sub account but not paid for from the master account wallet before upgrade will be paid for from the new master account wallet.
  • Any new purchases and subscriptions will be paid for from the new master account’s wallet.
