Begin the Overkill

B-movie horror comes to gruesome life on your PlayStation 3 with The House of the Dead: OVERKILL Extended Cut. SEGA's throwback to grindhouse cinema has its tongue firmly placed in cheek, aping the likes of Quentin Tarantino's Planet Terror. So expect action and irony aplenty, thrown into a gory blender with zombies, mutants and two bad cops who don't know the meaning of backing down.

With the toe-tapping strains of funk and rock playing in the background, The House of the Dead: OVERKILL Extended Cut is brimming with an intentionally nostalgic feel. A gravel throated narrator introduces memorably named stages such as Papa's Palace of Pain, while the excellent High Definition visuals crackle and flicker like a grindhouse drive-in film.

If you're feeling brave and have a compatible TV, play The House of the Dead: OVERKILL Extended Cut in stereoscopic 3D and watch a variety of frightening beasts jump out the screen to attack you. One boss in particular will have you ducking behind the sofa in sheer terror as she pauses the game to crawl out from the TV and claw at you.

The House of the Dead: OVERKILL Extended Cut is packed with equal amounts of horror and humour. Whether you're a fan of ironic grindhouse style movies or just enjoy fierce arcade shooters, SEGA's game will have you in stitches with its hilarious presentation that grabs you from the very moment you start playing.

A graveyard smash

The House of the Dead: OVERKILL Extended Cut on PlayStation 3 is a rootin' tootin' arcade shooter full of fun and firepower. With a clichéd duo of two cops who couldn't be more different, your job is to take up arms and go after the cackling criminal mastermind Papa Caesar.

With Agent G and Detective Washington on the case and your finger on the trigger of your PlayStation Move motion controller, an army of mindless zombies await. Your job? To blast through anyone who gets in your way.

It's a colossal job through nine levels, each containing a gruesome horde of mutants, ranging from undead clowns to brutal zombie nurses. Mashing monsters is great fun, and although you don't need a motion controller to play, having a PS Move not only increases your precision, it makes The House of the Dead: OVERKILL Extended Cut even more engaging. If you have a PlayStation Move sharp shooter combined with your PS Move, you can really feel like an action movie hero.

And you'll need that extra accuracy as the mutants are nimble little fiends. Accurate shots are the key to swiftly putting them down, as well as making sure you always have bullets in the chamber. Thankfully, there are plenty of power-ups to help you destroy your foes. If grenades won't do the job, then try shooting adrenalin icons to reduce the speed of the on-screen action and pick off even the fastest brute.

You can also upgrade your basic weapon to increase its capabilities such as damage and fire rate, as well as buy new weapons such as an automatic shotgun and crossbow. These aren't just handy for making sure you stay alive in these sinister times, they're also useful to pick out the variety of memorabilia strewn across each stage. You can collect 3D models, concept art, music and comic book pages, all of which can be enjoyed from the main menu.

With its fantastic sense of humour and all out action, The House of the Dead: OVERKILL Extended Cut is an explosive barrel of laughs that captures the over the top spirit of a grindhouse movie. There's plenty to keep you coming back too when you complete the Story Mode, as new weapons and modes become available, such as the Director's Cut missions: fancy a fresh challenge with tougher enemies, extended levels and a limited amount of continues?

House party

You don't have to take on the zombie masses alone in The House of the Dead: OVERKILL Extended Cut. If you have another wireless controller or PlayStation Move motion controller then you can blast through the Story Mode with a partner at your side. Whether you're taking down mutants or battling it out for high scores, the frantic fun becomes even more intense with a friend.

If you need extra back-up, up to four of you enjoy some double-barrelled mayhem in three mini-games. Victim Support has you saving survivors from a grisly, brain-chomping doom as you pick off oncoming zombies from all angles. If self preservation is more your thing then try Staying Alive, where you have to survive as long as you can against an ever increasing rampaging horde of mutants.

For those with a rush of competitive blood, there's Money Shot II, a tricky carnival shooting stall where the hotshot with the highest score wins. You can also see how your Story Mode performance ranks against other PlayStation Network players via the online leader boards. Think your sharpshooting is the best in the world? Prove it in The House of the Dead: OVERKILL Extended Cut.
