The tale of the Grey Warden

The survival of humanity rests in the hands of those chosen by fate. You are a Grey Warden, one of the last of an ancient order of guardians who have defended the lands throughout the centuries. Betrayed by a trusted General in a critical battle, you must hunt down the traitor and bring him to justice.

As you fight your way towards the final confrontation with an evil nemesis, you face monstrous foes and engage in epic quests that span an entire world to unite the disparate peoples of a world at war. A romance with a seductive shape-shifter may hold the key to victory, or she may be a dangerous diversion from the heart of your mission.

To be a leader, you must make ruthless decisions and be willing to sacrifice your friends and loved ones for the greater good of mankind. Are you prepared to do that? The answers lie in Dragon Age: Origins.

The faces of Dragon Age: Origins

On your adventure you come across a multitude of characters living in the world. Loghain Mac Tir is one, a warrior defending the land in Dragon Age from the tyrannies of evil alongside the naive and inexperienced King Cailan Theirin. Other central characters who play a major role in your progression are Alistair, a Grey Warden who, should you opt to take on the role of a female character at the outset of the game, becomes romantically involved with you. Of course, should you choose to play as a male character, you'll find love with Morrigan, a witch who can teach you how transform into a creature using one of the many special abilities on offer.

Queen Anora is the wife of King Cailan Theirin, who constantly strives to maintain economic security in the land of Ferelden, another central character in the story you will encounter and assist as the story unfolds. The final pivotal player in Dragon Age is Arl Eamon Guerrin, the owner of a huge castle that is arguably one of the most fortified and useful places in Dragon Age. Alongside these you will also meet a number of supporting characters, who, while not playing as important a role as the others, lend themselves to your character development and progression.

    Becoming a hero

The first step in your quest in Dragon Age is to create your character. Here, you can choose from Human, Elf or Dwarf and male or female, each with six Origin Stories to select from, representing a number of hours of gameplay on their own even before you begin to explore the game's main storyline. These Origins teach you all the basics for surviving in the world of Dragon Age. Combat, movement, dialogue and inventory management are all covered in great detail, ensuring you're more than prepared to tackle the huge world waiting for you.

If you're someone who enjoys lengthy games, then playing as every character is guaranteed to yield rewards, and over 80 hours of gameplay, possibly even more should you spend time sourcing out the game's myriad side quests. Dragon Age is packed with hours of replay value because whichever Origin Story you choose, the game shapes itself around that choice meaning that each reward is entirely different than the last one.

As you progress through the story you're given optional responses to questions from those you meet on your quest. Depending on your response, your actions can have an effect on how the warriors accompanying you on your journey perceive you. Making the right decision, no matter how big or small, is paramount to achieving the best possible outcome in the long run.

    The story continues

In Dragon Age: Origins developer BioWare is constantly striving to deliver regular downloadable content to fans of the game. The first piece of downloadable of these is called Return to Ostagar, and sees you embark on a quest for revenge and the search for the weapons and armour of King Cailan. To do this, you must return to Ostagar, the location of the Grey Warden's darkest hour where hundreds of them were slaughtered in battle.

Other great downloadable content on the way includes Dragon Age: Awakenings, an expansion pack that takes place after the events of the original game and puts you in control of a Grey Warden Commander entrusted with rebuilding the order of the Grey Wardens. Alongside this, you will also have to discover the mysteries behind how certain enemies you thought dead have managed to survive the events and battles of the first game. Each piece of downloadable content promises to add even more hours of gripping gameplay to the huge tale that is Dragon Age: Origins as well as new weapons, abilities and a whole host of characters.
