Setting up a wireless Internet connection using the [Custom] settings

If you would like to set up a PlayStation 3 to a Wireless Network (Wi-Fi) using the [Custom] settings, this article will take you through the necessary steps to do so.

Before you begin:

  • Ensure that the settings for the wireless access point (usually a router) are correct and that its power cable is properly connected. If it is battery-powered, check that the batteries have not run out.
  • Ensure that the Ethernet cable is not connected to the PlayStation 3 system, or the PlayStation 3 system will automatically attempt to connect to the Internet via a wired connection.
  1. Access the XMB Menu and choose [Settings] > [Network Settings].
  1. Choose [Internet Connection] > [Enabled].
  1. Scroll down and select [Internet Connection Settings].
  2. When you are asked if it is okay to disconnect the PlayStation 3 system from the Internet, select [Yes].
  3. When you are asked to choose a [setting method], select [Custom].
  4. When you are asked to choose a [connection method] , select [Wireless].
  5. When you are asked to enter [WLAN Settings], choose [Scan]. NOTE: if your wireless access point supports AOSS, select the [Automatic] option.
  6. Choose your access point from the list of SSIDs displayed.
  7. Press the [RIGHT] button to confirm the SSID.
  8. Choose your wireless access point’s security setting from those displayed.
  9. Enter your wireless access point’s security key and press the START button to confirm. Press the [RIGHT] button to proceed.
  10. The following three options will be displayed on-screen:
  • [Automatic] - This is the [Easy] setting, whereby your PlayStation 3 system will be automatically assigned an IP address. Most wireless local area networks (WLAN) support this method.
  • [Manual] - This setting is designed for wireless networks which use a static IP address.
  • [PPPoE] - This setting is designed for DSL broadband connections, which require a user ID and password (case-sensitive).

Manual connection:

  • Choose [Manual] and press the [RIGHT] button to proceed.
  • Enter the IP address as supplied by your Internet service provider or the person who set up the WLAN. Press the [RIGHT] button to proceed.
  • Enter any required Proxy settings, ensuring that all details are entered correctly.

PPPoE connection:

  • Choose [PPPoE] and press the [RIGHT] button to proceed.
  • Enter your PPPoE username/user ID and password as supplied by your Internet service provider. Press the [RIGHT] button to proceed.
  • Enter any required DNS and Proxy settings, ensuring that all details are entered correctly.
  1. A list of settings will be displayed. Ensure that they are correct and press the [] button to confirm.
  2. When you are asked to test the connection, press the [] button to confirm.
  1. An on-screen message will be displayed informing you whether the PlayStation 3 system was able to establish a connection.
