How to set up PS VR Cinematic Mode

PS VR Cinematic Mode allows you to view content including PS4 games and videos on a virtual screen of up to 226 inches.

Cinematic Mode can display anything that your PS4 would deliver to your TV using your PS VR headset. With this mode you can free up your TV by using the virtual cinema screen to play normal (non-VR) PS4 games, watch 3D Blu-ray Discs and browse the internet in 2D.

How do I start PS VR in cinematic mode?

Just turn your PS4 on, plug in your headset and you’ll immediately be able to view the PS4 menu through the visor in Cinematic Mode. You can then start up an application, whether that’s a game, video, live event or 3D Blu-ray movie.

If you find that you are receiving an error message, check that each cable is correctly inserted and then try restarting your PS VR system.

What resolutions/ display sizes are available in the VR Mode?

There are three different screen sizes available to view movies or TV through your PS VR:

  • Small: equivalent to 117 inches from 6-10 feet away.
  • Medium: equivalent to 163 inches from 6-10 feet away.
  • Large: equivalent to 226 inches from 6-10 feet away.

To make screen-size adjustments, use the Quick Menu:

  1. Press and hold the PS button to open the Quick Menu.
  2. Select [Adjust PlayStation VR] > [Screen Size].
  • Cinematic Mode resolutions

Content is playable in the following resolutions:

    480/60p, 576/50p, 720/50p, 720/60p, 1080/50i, 1080/50p, 1080/24p, 1080/60i, 1080/60p

  • 2D content in 4k (2160p)

On a PS4 system (CUH-7000 series), you can play content in 2160p, but the PS VR will use the YUV420 color format only. When you connect PS VR to a TV that supports 2160p, you’ll see content displayed as 1080p on your display device while the PS VR is turned On. While the PS VR is powered Off, your TV display will show 2160p resolution as normal.

Can you use PS VR Cinematic Mode without a TV?

Cinematic Mode can be used without a television. All you need is a PS4, PS VR headset, PS Camera and PS VR processing unit to enjoy your PlayStation content.

Having issues with PS VR Cinematic Mode?

Re-centre Your PS VR screen positioning

  1. Look towards the position you want the screen to be in, hold the Options button until the screen re-positions.
  2. If the issue persists, take off your VR headset and leave the power on. Place your VR headset in a location that is stable and free from vibration for approximately 10 seconds — then repeat step 1.

  • Keep watching for a few minutes to allow the system to correct itself. If that does not work, switch the PS4 and PS VR systems off, wait 30 seconds and then switch them on.
