How do I connect my PlayStation 3 system to a TV using an HDMI cable?

If you would like to connect your PlayStation 3 to a TV using an HDMI cable, this article will tell you what to do.

Note:

Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe (SIEE) has no information regarding supported HDMI converters - i.e. HDMI to DVI converters. SIEE cannot guarantee the effectiveness of any converter. Also, the PlayStation 3 system can only output video via one connector at a time; SIEE has no information regarding how to connect the PlayStation 3 system to multiple displays.

You will need to be able to access the HDMI input channel on your display device. Most display devices have multiple input or video channels, (i.e. Input 1, Input 2, Input 3 etc.). When you have completed HDMI setup on the PlayStation 3 system and connected the system to your display device via an HDMI cable, you may need to access each of your display device’s input channels in turn, in order to find the channel that displays HDMI input. Please refer to the manual supplied with your display device for more information.

  • Turn off the PlayStation 3 system and disconnect it from the power supply.
  • Turn off the display device and disconnect it from the power supply.
  • Insert one end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI OUT connector on the rear of the PlayStation 3 system.
  • Insert the other end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI Input connector of the display device.
  • Reconnect the PlayStation 3 system to the power supply and turn the PlayStation 3 system on.
  • Reconnect the display device to the power supply and turn it on.
  • The PlayStation 3 system will detect the HDMI display device automatically.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to confirm HDMI output, switch to the optimal settings and confirm the maximum resolution of the HD picture.

If you do not confirm the new settings within 30 seconds, the PlayStation 3 system will automatically revert to its previous display settings. If this occurs, manually change the Video Output Settings by going to the XMB™ Menu and choosing Settings > [Display Settings] > [Video Output Settings]. If the Video Output Settings do not match those required for the current display device, the screen may go blank when the resolution is changed. If the picture is not restored after 30 seconds, reset the Video Output Settings as follows:

  • Press and hold the PlayStation 3 system's Power button to turn the PlayStation 3 system off.
  • Press and hold the Power button for at least five seconds to turn the system on again.
  • The video output settings will automatically be reset to the standard resolution.
