Understanding and improving Network Connectivity

How do I improve my Internet Connectivity?

If you would like to improve your internet connectivity, you should try one of the following:

Use a wired connection - If you are connected to the Internet via a wireless connection, your online experience should be improved by connecting via a wired Ethernet connection instead.

Reduce the number of deces and applications running on your network - If any of the applications listed below are running on your computer, console, or mobile device, we recommend shutting them down to improve your Internet connectivity while streaming games.

  • Streaming video applications (Netflix, YouTube)
  • Cloud backup or sync applications (Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud)
  • Content downloads (BitTorrent, software, games, movies, or music)
  • Video/audio communication apps (FaceTime, Skype)

Keep in mind that other people who share your Internet connection may have applications running on their devices too. A roommate or family member watching a Netflix video, downloading a game to their PlayStation 4, or performing some other high-bandwidth activity, can affect your available bandwidth.

Try off-peak hours - If you’re on a public or shared Internet connection - an office, hotel, library, or college dormitory - you may experience limited bandwidth, especially during high-usage times like early evenings and weekends. Please try connecting during lower-usage times such as early mornings or late nights.

Use the system in close proximity to the Wi-Fi access point - The strength of the wireless signal could be greatly weakened if there are obstacles between your system and the access point. It can be affected by walls, ceilings, doors, or other materials. Microwave ovens, cordless phones, plumbing, and other household equipment can also affect wireless transmission. To maintain a strong signal for your system, place the Wi-Fi access point in a location with a clear view of its surroundings.

Change the Wi-Fi access point or install a Wi-Fi repeater - If the wireless signal is weak and it is difficult to use a LAN cable, the network quality can be improved by changing the wireless channel or converting to an access point with increased radio field transmission strength. The use of a wireless repeater or amplifier can also improve the signal strength. Please contact the manufacturer for further information about access points and wireless repeaters.

Connect the PlayStation 4 directly to PlayStation Vita/PlayStation TV - If communication is unstable during Remote Play between PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita/ PlayStation TV, the radio wave transmission quality can be improved through direct communication between the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita/ PlayStation TV, rather than via the home network. On the PlayStation 4, go to [Settings] > [Remote Play Connection Settings] and check the box next to [Connect Directly with PS Vita/PS TV]. If you do not see any benefit, uncheck the box.
