Worldwide rap phenomenon and music maker extraordinaire 50 Cent makes his console return with this third person, adrenaline fuelled romp through the streets of a torn country in search of revenge and a priceless crystal skull. Following on from 50 Cent: Bulletproof, Blood on the Sand see 50 and his G-Unit crew perform a sold-out show in a fictional war-torn country only to have their takings stolen from them by the city’s crime baron, a former CIA operative known as The Harvester.
In lieu of their cash being stolen, 50 and his threesome of rap cohorts, Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo and DJ Whoo Kid are handed a priceless bejewelled skull, only for them to be ambushed on their way back from the concert and have that stolen from them too. Naturally, the only thing to do is to strap on an arsenal of pistols, machine guns and small explosives and head out in search of their payment, bringing both the thieves and the small city to its knees in the process.
Guns, guns and more guns
Blood on the Sand can be played on your own, with an AI controlled partner by your side guiding you through the streets, or with a friend in both online and offline co-operative play, making for some high octane action that will have you ducking for cover and clinging to the edge of your seat from mission to bullet riddled mission. As 50, you’ve got a huge array of weapons at your disposal, and you’ll have to earn heavier firepower by unlocking skill points and amassing enough cash as you progress through each level.
Be it the world’s most powerful handgun, machine gun, sniper rifle or rocket launcher, there is a piece of artillery for every single scenario 50 encounters as you blaze through the game, partner by your side. However, action isn’t just limited to stomping around on foot. There are plenty of moments where 50 gets behind the wheel of a Humvee, smashing through barricades in hot pursuit of enemies as well as taking to the air and manning a mini-gun in a helicopter to rake gunfire over The Harvester’s plethora of armed forces as you storm his huge palace in the hills. Plus, if an enemy gets close enough to 50, he’s got a wealth of lethal takedown moves to hand that are performed by following on-screen button prompts.
Just like the advanced weaponry, there are a myriad of other, even more brutal counter attacks to unlock the more skill points and cash your have in the bank. Purchasing these moves and weapons is simple too; just get to one of the many phone boxes dotted around each level and it will take to you the store where each one can be collected for a fee.
Fast, furious and fun
Each mission is loaded with cover points that you’ll have to duck behind if you want to make it through to the other side alive and popping to these is a mere matter of tapping the X button near one for 50 to slide into it. Mastering the cover system is a must in Blood In The Sand as is chaining kills in a quick series of succession.
The more enemies you send to a dusty demise, the more points you’ve got, and in turn the greater the reward you’re handed at the end of the mission as your score is tallied through bronze, silver or gold awards. The higher the award means better rewards such as cheats and bonus extras, which add extra replay value for you and a friend.
50 fans are in for a massive treat too, the superstar has recorded 18 exclusive tracks that can be spun as you fight through the streets along with a wealth of classic numbers from his catalogue of records to date. Alternatively you have the option of selecting the exclusive instrumental score from the playlist composed by 50 and his producer for Blood on the Sand to play out as your run and gun your way through the game.
