Carcosa: A bold new vision for humanity

The remote, self-managed colony world of Carcosa will meet humanity’s growing needs by both providing a new home for the willing and, through Lucenite extraction, supply vital resources to Earth.

Decades of investment

Soltari is one of Earth’s largest corporations, boasting millions of employees across Earth and worlds far beyond.

Carcosa is Soltari’s most ambitious undertaking yet. It is the culmination of decades of investment into aerospace engineering, deep space travel, off-world survival and machine intelligence.

Lucenite: A miracle resource

Lucenite acquisition is the overriding purpose of the Carcosan project: its energy potential has no known equal.

This naturally occurring mineral is exclusive to Carcosa. Once successfully returned to Earth, a kilogramme would meet a city’s energy needs for almost a decade. Its fuel potential means Soltari vessels could reach more worlds than ever believed possible, acting as an immediate accelerator to human progress.

As Soltari will be its sole patent holder, revenue will reach trillions from day one.

All other concerns on Carcosa are therefore secondary.

The Eclipse

As well as the myriad natural dangers of Carcosa, there is the constant threat of the Eclipse. It repeats on a confoundingly irregular cycle, and seemingly at the behest of forces other than solar or lunar orbital frequency. Its erratic properties are beyond current Soltari understanding.

During an Eclipse, the native creatures of Carcosa are affected both psychologically and physiologically – become far more aggressive and powerful. Curiously, the recurrent solar event seems to affect cartographic data – following an Eclipse, maps of Carcosa are no longer accurate and must be created anew.

Psychological abberations

The Eclipse has also been noted to negatively affect human dispositions and their emotional state. All Soltari employees are advised to be vigilant for signs of unusual behaviour amongst their colleagues.

Following a failure to establish remote communications with any of the previous Echelon flights, and therefore great uncertainty about the success of the colony effort, an emergency crew has been dispatched aboard Echelon IV to investigate and resolve any unforeseen difficulties on Carcosa.

A contingent of Enforcers will perform reconnaissance and, where necessary, security interventions in order to locate and safeguard the Soltari colony. Mission oversight and support will be provided by an experienced Commander and the latest Primary model.

DO:

  • Maintain that the Carcosan colony is still presumed to be active and successful.
  • Emphasise the importance of securing the mining operation over colonist wellbeing.
  • Remind crew that any doubts and concerns should be taken to the designated Primary unit, rather than disclosed to colleagues.

DO NOT:

  • Refer to the Echelon programme with any terminology that implies failure to meet expectations.
  • Disclose that there has been no contact with prior Echelon missions since [REDACTED]
  • Allow any crew member to engage in reconnaissance without Enforcer protection.

Carcosa Locations

Shattered Rise
Shattered Rise during the Eclipse

Shattered Rise

The Shattered Rise is a rocky and mountainous region in which the planet’s native (and highly aggressive) creatures run wild – but which also contains multiple structures and remnant technology built by an advanced and hitherto-unidentified species.

A further conundrum is the degree of geological transformation seen in Shattered Rise during and following an Eclipse, and why neither this nor the abandoned structures were detected by long-range scans. These factors may well be related to the fate of the missing Soltari colony.

Ancient Depths

A sprawling subterranean region of Carcosa, comprising a mix of natural caverns and artificially created tunnels and chambers. While this area had been identified as a likely source of Lucenite, and therefore a priority for survey by prior Echelon personnel, it transpires that Carcosa’s previous civilisation had already established a substantial underground mining operation. Soltari was therefore not the first to realise Lucenite’s potential.

The Ancient Depths are patrolled by still-functional machine entities of alien design. Additionally, unidentified non-machine presences have been detected in the Ancient Depths.

Extreme caution is advised.

The Passage

A significant structure of alien origin and indeterminate age and purpose. Hostile entities inexplicably do not attempt to enter The Passage. It has therefore been used as a safehouse and staging ground by Echelon IV personnel while they search for the missing Soltari colony and/or survivors from prior Echelon flights.

They have dubbed it The Passage, as it is their gateway to Carcosa.

Unusual technologies have been discovered within The Passage, while certain areas of it cannot yet be accessed. Echelon IV’s Primary unit will therefore attempt to study and harness the structure – its technologies will be of exceptional value to Soltari.

The Passage is protected from the topographical realignment and psychological disruption caused by the recurring Carcosan Eclipse. It can be presumed that this is by design – whoever or whatever built it intended it to serve as an eye in the storm.

Equipment briefing

Power weapons

Of particular note are what have been dubbed Power Weapons – armaments of massive destructive potential, but which would require a vast amount of Enforcer Armour’s available power for every activation.

While these should be treated with great caution (indeed, there is mounting evidence to suggest they may cause physiological change in their wielder), the likes of the Prominence and Illumine may ultimately be necessary to survive the myriad dangers of Carcosa.

Prominence
Dispiritor
Illumine

Prominence

First Carcosan Power Weapon to be discovered. Launches lethally explosive energy shells.

Dispiritor

Causes its targets to be consumed from within, by accelerating entropy at a molecular level.

Illumine

Focuses its output into a potent beam of golden energy, which causes devastating, sustained damage.

Artefacts

Other alien technology has been recovered from the wilds of the Carcosa. These Artefacts can dramatically alter Enforcer Armour and its capabilities, including its ability to resist damage and Corruption, or to harvest resources from the environment. However, the effect only lasts for as long as the wearer is conscious.

Judicious use of Artefacts in the field may enable Enforcers to overcome insurmountable hazards – although some may cause adverse side-effects.

Soltari Enforcer standard issue

A sizeable Soltari arsenal is provided to all Enforcer teams, obtainable via their designated Primary unit. This includes handcannons, shotguns and assault rifles, all in their standard specifications. However, specialist variants are available should the expedition require them.

These include the auto-targeting Smart Rifle and its alternative payload of autonomous drone projectiles, the once-outlawed Eruptor Handcannon (capable of outright executing a target at sufficiently close-range) and the grenade-dispensing Annihilator Shotgun.

Carcosan technology

Certain unusual and ancient weapons of non-Soltari design have also been recovered from the Carcosan environment. While these will require research and high-level authorisation, initial assessment suggests they can be adapted for Enforcer usage and thus gain a new battlefield edge.
