Despite finally understanding her origins and the events that plunged the world into a technological dark age, the revelations at the end of Horizon Zero Dawn (which you can read about here if you need a refresher) mean plenty of mysteries remain for Aloy.
A sojourn to the west also means new machines to hunt, new tribes to meet and new threats to confront, all amidst the backdrop of seemingly cataclysmic new dangers coming to life.

Elden Ring takes the same care in crafting the tightly interconnected worlds of FromSoftware's previous games and expands them to a true open world teeming with little nooks and crannies to explore.
It also continues the developer's trademark incredible depth of combat (now including horseback combat), wide variety of weapons and accompanying skills and, of course, a hefty challenge to keep you coming back.
Release date: February 25, 2022Developer Techland’s infected apocalypse sequel, taking place 20 years after the original, sees humanity on the ropes. It carefully maintains the same sense of daytime resource gathering and nighttime survival that made the original such a potent mix of parkour exploration and risk/reward adrenaline as the sun dips below the horizon.
These infected might be sluggish in the day, they’re fast, aggressive and deadly as the light dies.

2018's God of War depicted Kratos' struggle as a conflicted father and mourning husband in a deeply personal new take on the Spartan general.
Now, with his son seeking to find his own place in the world, Kratos must help Atreus explore what it means to be the child of a Greek demigod and one of the last remaining giants in the realms.
Will father and son continue on their journey to "be better" or will they slip into the old, destructive patterns that defined Kratos' past as the Norse twilight of the gods nears?

The culmination of decades of the Real Driving Simulator has resulted in a game that plies all the racing history, fantasy and real-world tracks, hundreds of customisable vehicles and deep online seasonal events towards a new generation of simulation.
The return of the “CaRPG” (imagine the steady levelling up of a role-playing game with cars as the focus instead of swords and sorcery) also means a steady sense of individual vehicle progression while building out a dream livery of personalized daily drivers and innovative collaborations with car manufacturers that push the limits of what modern race cars can be.

Release date: TBC 2022
The left-field juxtaposition of the deep combat of developer Team Ninja’s Nioh games and a new, darker take on the original FINAL FANTASY universe released in 1987 sees characters attempting to bring forth the original prophecy of the Warriors of Light, fated to kill Chaos and save the world from the Darkness.
A deep job system means weapons, abilities and equipment can be quick-swapped, leading to blisteringly fast (and flashy) boss encounters that play heavily into Team Ninja’s ability to blend deep-yet-accessible combat systems and Square Enix’s penchant for gorgeously detailed worlds.

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands continues the "fantasy-but-with-guns" angle for Borderlands 2's most surprisingly affective DLC, Assault on Dragon Keep.
Voice actress Ashly Burch returns to deliver her inimitably manic performance, and all the looter-shooter trappings that have come to define the Borderlands universe await... with dragons, of course.
Release date: March 25, 2022Extraction takes Rainbow Six Siege's time-tested mélange of tactical shooting, environmental destruction (and repair) and squad-based online multiplayer... and mixes in an alien invasion.
It might seem like an abrupt shift for the previously grounded series, but the deviation into the fantastical changes this from a competitive experience to a cooperative one. Tackle procedurally generated objectives while balancing the risk of being overrun by choosing to extract or explore deeper into the alien-infested levels.
Release date: January 20, 2022The latest from Rocksteady Studios (the creators of the Batman: Arkham series) mixes the studio's signature character-driven story gameplay with an increased focus on third-person shooting and multiplayer co-op.

It's a testament to both the simplicity of the premise (a stray cat living in a robotic society apparently free of humans) and the effortless execution of it through gorgeous animation and detailed neon-bathed environments that it all just clicks without the need for over-explanation. To that end, if you haven't yet watched the game's trailer, that video over there is the first thing you should click on.

Developer Roll7 somehow perfectly reimagined the "just one more try" magic of the original Tony Hawk games with their tightly controlling OlliOlli 2D skateboarding games. It's fitting, then, that OlliOlli World has finally made the leap to the third dimension with the explorable skateboarding utopia called Radlandia.
The new perspective allows players to shift lanes into the foreground or background of the level, take in wide vistas, and pull off grabs, wall grinds and other tricks that simply weren't possible from the flat 2D design of the original two games, all without losing the instant restarts and constant pursuit of perfection of the 2D originals.
Release date: February 8, 2022
New to the Salt and Sanctuary sequel is online co-op, allowing you to join another player in your hunt as a Marked Inquisitor to purge mages from the intricately presented land. Addionally, a deep crafting system for items and things like a wall jump and grappling hook have made environments more intricate and explorable.
The result is something that feels like a kind of retro-inspired de-evolution — the best aspects of From's deeply technical combat and environmental storytelling are infused with a surprisingly evocative side-scrolling 2D perspective.
Release date: TBC 2022
It's perhaps a good thing that very, very little of Little Devil Inside's tilt-shift-inspired maquette-style overworld visuals and quaint Victorian interior shots betray the kind of slowly revealed Lovecraftian horrors and monsters that must be hunted.
It's this mix of survival, exploration and cooperation, all mixed with just a hint that not everyone is what they seem, that helps give the whole game a slightly dreamlike quality in the best possible way.
Release date: TBC 2022Sifu is a literal lifetime in-game journey to avenge the murder of a young man's family. With every death, the main character is resurrected, but the progression of time doesn't stop, and they age, reducing their health but making their strikes more deadly.
As the character seeks revenge for his family's death, the player's own developing skillsets become the character's and the risk/reward setup tips from brute force to strategic strikes to offset fragility.
Release date: February 8, 2022
It's perhaps a bit presumptuous to include a game in this list based purely on a few teasers and the strength of the original game. It's precisely because of that original game—recalling the glory days of the side-scrolling point-and-click adventures of yore, while mixing in healthy doses of supernatural bone chills—that OXENFREE II feels so exciting.
Release date: TBC 2022
A bright, inviting, exploration-heavy sandbox adventure all set in a tropical paradise inspired by New Caledonia. Oh, and to make it a little easier to explore, you can soul jump into any object or animal around the archipelago, from fish to birds to land creatures. Renowned action specialists PlatinumGames, responsible for (among others) NieR: Automata, returns with a fresh new take on the Action RPG genre.
They’ve taken all their trademark fluid combat and time-based dodges, interesting weapon and skill trees, and combo strings that just feel right, and blended them together with four player co-op set in a unique fantasy setting with a medieval oil painting aesthetic.

Forspoken sports a powerhouse cast, including Gary Whitta (Rogue One) and Amy Hennig (Uncharted) as authors, and Bear McCreary (Battlestar Galactica), and Garry Schyman (Destroy All Humans!, BioShock) composing.
Why all the names? Things are being closely held right now. The trailer clips of zipping along are absolutely part of the game, as is the New-Yorker-in-a-new-world plot, but new traversal through a visually rich world just makes the contrast that much more intriguing.

While vital to the story by J.R.R. Tolkien, many parts of Gollum's quest have not yet been told in detail. He has seen things that others cannot imagine, and has survived things that others would not dare mention. Torn by his split personality, he can be vicious and villainous as Gollum, but social and cautious as Sméagol. In The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, you get to experience his story — from his time as a slave below the Dark Tower to his stay with the elves of Mirkwood in an adventure that goes beyond screen and page.
