How to create an adult account on PSN

Find out how to set up an account on your PlayStation system.

You need an account to use PlayStation Network services. It's free to create an account and you do not need to provide any payment details. However, your PSN wallet will require funding for some services.

Find out how to set up child accounts.

After choosing basic system settings select  [User 1] > [Next] > [New to PlayStation Network? Create an Account] > [Sign Up Now] and follow the onscreen instructions.

You may find that you’ll need to update the system software. Your PS4 will do this automatically after connecting to the internet.

Select [New User] > [Create a User] when you start up your PS4 and follow the onscreen instructions to link it to an account.

If the system has auto log-in set up for an existing user, simply long press the PS button to open the quick menu and select [Power] > [Switch User] to get back to the log-in screen.

For full step by step directions, select your PlayStation system:

  • PS4

    1. Select [New User] > [Create a User] or  [User 1] on the PS4 Log-in screen.

This creates a local user on the PS4 itself, not an account.

    2. Select [Next] > [New to PlayStation Network? Create an Account] > [Sign Up Now].

If you select [Skip] you can choose the avatar and name for your local user and play offline right away. Go to your avatar on the PS4 home screen to sign up for PSN later.

    3. Enter your details and preferences and select [Next] on each screen.

If you’re under 18 when you enter your birthday, you can create a local user for offline play but will need to ask an adult to approve your child account.

Do not enter false security information, doing so will breach the PSN terms of service and prevent you from recovering the account in the future.

    4. Create an Online ID and enter your first and last name.

Your Online ID is your publicly visible name that other users on PSN will see.

    5. Choose your Sharing, Friends and Messages settings (three screens).

If you are under 18, account creation ends here. You can either ask an adult to sign in with their account to authorise PSN access or play offline until your account is authorised.

    6. Read and accept the PSN Terms of Service.

    7. Check your email and click the verification link.

If you didn’t receive an account verification email, check the spam and junk folders.

If you still can't find the email, select [Help] to change your email address or ask us to resend the email.

The account is now created. You can now sign up for PlayStation Plus. If you are a family manager, you are now ready to create accounts for younger players
