Cancel any failed update notification message and delete them, then start the PS4 in safe mode.

    https://www.playstation.com/en-gb/get-help/help-library/system---hardware/power---system-stability/safe-mode-on-playstation-4.ps4/

Select option 3 Update System Software then update over the internet.

    What is Safe Mode?

Safe Mode allows you to start your PS4 system with only the most basic functions active. The Safe Mode options are designed to help you solve issues with your PS4 system so that it can function normally.

Some Safe Mode options will result in the loss of data. Always attempt to back up data from your PS4 system to an external hard drive, USB storage device or Online Storage before selecting an option from the Safe Mode menu. Safe Mode is designed to fix issues with PS4 firmware and should only be used when recommended by a PlayStation support article or Sony support staff member.

How do I start the PS4 in Safe Mode?

    1. Turn off the PS4 system by pressing the power button on the front panel. The power indicator will blink for a few moments before turning off.
    2. Once the PS4 system is off, press and hold the power button again. Release it after you hear the second beep: one beep will sound when you first press, and another seven seconds later.
    3. Connect the DUALSHOCK 4 with the USB cable and press the PS button on the controller.

What are the Safe Mode Options?

The following options are available in Safe Mode:

Select an option below to find out what each function does, and how it can be useful.

    • 1

      Restart System

    • 2

      Change Resolution

    • 3

      Update System Software

    • 4

      Restore Default Settings

    • 5

      Rebuild Database

The following two options will permanently delete all data and settings from your PS4 system. Please make sure to back up any data to a USB storage device or Online Storage.

    • 6

      Initialize PS4

    • 7

      Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software)

The final option will only appear on PS4 Pro systems. HDCP Mode is not available on standard PS4 systems.

    • 8

      Set HDCP Mode

I've had this error! It occurs when you have your Playstation on rest mode since the update has been available. To fix this, restart your Playstation then click on the update notification and follow the on-screen steps.

I had the same error. All I did was restart my ps4 and it’s updating fine now. If that doesn’t work try updating in safe mode. When I was looking for fixes to this issue many were saying to just update it in safe mode.

I found a backup, instead of basically ducking up your ps4 and starting over, go to the safe mode, but restart the ps4, then go to your profile, click your username, and uldate

Why wont the safe mode screen option appear? I held down power and waited for beeps...1st beep but not the 2nd...system immediately restarted. Such a pain.

Is the system completely off with no lights?
