    Same world, new tales

After the events of the first Tales of Xillia the world is a strange and different place. The barrier between Elympios and the magical land of Rieze Maxia has fallen, and citizens from the two worlds mingle in harmony. Now weird things are happening to the timeline, and there are those who want to destroy the fledgling peace before it's truly begun.

None of this affects Ludgar Kresnik. Having failed his entrance exam to become an agent of the prestigious Spirius Corporation like his big brother Julius, Ludgar is preparing for a safe, boring life as a cafeteria chef.

But Ludgar's first day at work is going to be an eventful one. After a chance encounter with a mysterious young girl, Ludgar will be thrust into an adventure full of danger and excitement, where his personal choices will change the fate of the entire world.

An anime epic that you control

The vibrant world of Tales of Xillia 2 is packed with distinctive characters, an epic plot and some excellent voice acting. Many touches will make you feel like you're in control of your very own anime, whether it's the action-packed cutscenes by Japanese studio Ufotable, the animated portraits that appear when using special moves or the fully voice acted "skits" that expand the game's complex plot.

There's a vast world to explore in which almost every character has something to say for themselves. If you haven't played the first Tales of Xillia you'd be forgiven for worrying that you'd be left behind by the expansive world and huge number of characters. Luckily the in-game library has details on the setting and the plot of the previous game, and it's more than enough to fill in any blanks for you.

    Many fates entwined

You can construct a party from nine diverse characters, each with their own distinct fighting style. Character missions delve deep into the background of your party members, so each one feels developed and alive.

The cast from Tales of Xillia make a reappearance, some as party members. Jude, Leia and Alvin all return, and there are plenty of opportunities to find out what they've been up to in the year since their original quest finished.

You'll be able to influence Ludgar's actions and dialogue during cutscenes, and the choices you make for him will affect how the story progresses and how his relationships with the rest of the cast will grow.

    Switch weapons, switch gears

Like many role-playing games, Tales of Xillia 2 is divided between exploration and combat. Combat is fast-paced, so you'll need to stay on your toes and be ready to switch gears in an instant.

Mobility is important - dodging attacks is all up to you, and you'll have to keep moving if you don't want to get knocked to the ground. Enemies with different strengths will attempt to team-up on you if you aren't careful. Luckily Ludgar can switch weapon types on the fly, so keep manoeuvring and tailor your weapons and attacks to different foes.

The innovative Link System is the key to victory, and the deepest and most rewarding part of Tales of Xillia 2's fluid combat system. Link with other characters and they'll watch your back, lift you up when you're downed, heal you when you're hurting and unleash powerful chained attacks made up of combinations of your most powerful moves.

Tales of Xillia 2 is available now from PlayStation Store.
