Life as an elite ninja is incredibly varied, and you can be sure of one thing: plenty of bruises. Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 dishes them out with abandon – and as Naruto, you can give as good as you get.
While there’s plenty of opportunity to embark on entertaining side quests to find hidden treasures, frenetic head-to-head showdowns form the bulk of the Ultimate Adventure Mode. These story missions reveal enemies’ motivations, as well as advancing the plot and pointing you to your next port of call, not to mention being the most spectacular encounters in the game.
The battle system is simple at first, and offers deceptive depth as you master its subtleties. You have one close-up attack and one long-range strike – using deadly shuriken in Naruto’s case – and by using a magical energy known as Chakra, you can supercharge these with devastating force. The result is a huge number of moves as you combine Chakra moves with basic strikes to leave an enemy dazed and deflated.
It’s richly rewarding, with complex chains being linked together as much as your imagination – and reflexes – will allow. Battles don’t stop there – some sequences require you to speedily input button commands in the heat of battle to keep you on your toes, unlocking secret cutscenes which give away more snippets of the story.
Add in special items which can drastically reduce an enemy’s power, more than 20 fully destructible stages and eye-wateringly slick action, and Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 is a blistering assault on the senses.
