The PlayStation Winter Survival Guide

Looking for ways to brighten up January without breaking the bank? Get 2020 off to a fun, affordable start on PS4 with these tips.


1. Clear your backlog

If the holidays have left you short on cash for new purchases, now is the perfect time to tackle any unfinished business in your game library.

Days Gone

If you’ve finished Deacon’s story but aren’t ready to leave the Pacific Northwest, try New Game Plus mode. You keep all the weapons and perks from the main game, but can crank up the difficulty as high as Survival II if you’ve got the nerve. Make sure you secure Gold ranking in all the challenges first if you want to stand a chance against the Horde and grab the new trophies on offer!

Death Stranding

Creator Hideo Kojima loves to hide easter eggs, cameos and cultural references in his games, and Death Stranding is no exception. Sam’s journey to re-connect civilisation is peppered with cameo appearances from familiar faces, unexpected interactions, and even a little treat if you play on your birthday. Have you found them all?


Exploring The Oldest House and facing the malevolent Hiss was one of last year’s most intriguing experiences - and there’s more for you to see once you finish the main story. As well as a multitude of hidden areas and documents to find, the free Expeditions update is out now, offering combat-focused challenges and a new storyline within a strange new dimension.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Cal’s path to restoring the Jedi Order is fraught with danger in this acclaimed action adventure, but discovering all the hidden areas on each planet help you on your journey. Find every Force Essence to make Cal a more powerful Jedi, hidden Force Echos to fill in more of the story, and track down all the hidden crates for cosmetic items for Cal, BD-1 and upgrades to your Lightsaber.

Blood & Truth

Even if you’ve finished Blood & Truth’s storyline, your life in the criminal underworld isn’t finished. There’s New Game Plus to get stuck into, as well as lots of ways to show off your gunplay prowess: Skeet challenges let you sharpen your skills by shooting clays in various game modes, while the recently added Gun Skills add new ways to showboat while hitting targets.

Concrete Genie

If you’ve played through Concrete Genie’s heartwarming story, you can’t fail to have been charmed by the world that Ash painted - so why not jump in there yourself? PS VR owners can access two virtual reality modes that provide new ways to use Living Paint in adventures custom built for PS VR. With a PS Move motion controller in hand, you’ll feel like you’re really wielding Ash’s paintbrush.

If you’re hungry for a brand-new adventure to kick off 2020, PlayStation Store is home to some incredible deals, with regular sales and promotions letting you bag big games for less. 


3. Try some free-to-play titles

Apex Legends

Destiny 2: New Light

Defend humanity's last safe city from an alien threat and explore the solar system in Bungie's acclaimed multiplayer sci-fi shooter, now free-to-play for PS Plus members. Features the base game, the Curse of Osiris and Warmind expansions, and all multiplayer modes.


Set out into a huge free-to-play fantasy world and team up with fellow Slayers to take down Behemoths - towering monsters that will put all your combat skills to the test. Defeat them, and you can harvest their parts to craft and upgrade weapons and armour to create a unique, powerful warrior. 


The sci-fi open world of Warframe offers fast-paced multiplayer third-person combat. Play as a powerful warrior with ninja-like abilities, protected by powerful armour known as Warframes. World of Tanks

Break out the heavy artillery in this sprawling, tactical wargame that brings global armies together on the battlefield to wreak glorious destruction. Expect detailed maps, an array of challenges to complete each month and in-depth battle stats to track as you blast your way through January and beyond.

Tropico 6

Assassin's Creed Odyssey

Create your own "THIS IS SPARTA!" moment as you dive into Ubisoft’s massive open-world adventure set in sun-dappled ancient Greece. With over 30 hours of dialogue and multiple endings, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey places you in a dynamic world that reacts to your decisions. 

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled

A savage planet sounds like the perfect destination for a stress-free vacation, right? The Outer Worlds

Embark on a galaxy-spanning open-world adventure from RPG specialists Obsidian, featuring intriguing eccentric characters, dark humour and branching storylines. Explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, and decide what kind of character you will become as your choices determine how the story unfolds.

No Man’s Sky

With a procedurally generated universe containing an almost infinite number of planets to explore, you’ll never run out of new things to see, do and discover. Horizon Zero Dawn

Join iconic PlayStation heroine Aloy in one of the defining games of the PS4 era. Persona 5

F1 2019

The most ambitious Formula One game in the franchise’s history puts you in the driving seat of the world’s fastest motorsport as you go up against the best of the best.
