The DS4 is a Direct input standard controler with extras added..
You use a USB DATA and POWER USB cable... and then you get a ping and windows 10 registers that you wish to use a Direct input controller on a PC the first time ever you use it on that PC...
Direct input controllers are NOT X-input controllers, X input is Microsofts supported controller input format and native to windows its what they PORTED to there windows OS based consoles...
Direct input controller is support by default on every thing but windows now... windows is still the last OS to still hold out from including support for automatic conversion from Direct input to X-input config, if games need it...
Mac OSX, Android 10, IOS 13, and linux all now support Direct input controllers
Because its not default in windows Apps and games can CHOOSE to support direct input config controllers... this means that there will be modern and old games that will not support the Direct input DS4...
Now depending on the risks you want to take there is third party software downloads that do the conversion from Direct input to Xinput but with steam launcher doing this as well both apps can clash...
If you have the Steam client and a DS4 and the DS4 does not naviagte the steam client then you have steam set up wrong or you have a broken USB port or broken USB cable...
If you purchased a THIRD PARTY Controller and not a DS4... it is up to that controller maker to be compliant with PC OS'es...
If you plug it in and it does not work with windows games thats up to the maker of that controller to sort out with Microsoft..
If your trying to use a third party controller with Remote play, don't bother trying with remoteplay only official DS4 controllers work with remote play...
