(view in landscape if the link is.... too long)

EA & Epic have just finished answering to a UK Parliamentary Committee regarding Fortnite, Fifa, Age restrictions, spending and addiction, even dev crunch and more.

I managed to catch some of it live, but I'm now giving it a rewatch.

Interesting stuff, imo shocking in lack of knowledge by all sides, attempts at avoiding answers, pushing the blame around, and more smh facepalming fodder.

Epic especially seemed dodgy from the bits I caught.

Right at the beginning they deny it it even possible to spend £1600 (story featured recently on the forum somewhere)

Re requesting refunds (talking about £1600 case) "yup" although later I know they say its not down to epic, but Sony and parents.

Just giving it a watch just now and it's full of comedy. I don't think epic could have sent people who are anymore clueless. One guy is just staring at the floor as he answers a question. 😂

Mrs let me watch it all on the main TV as she has partial interest in some of it job wise 😉

I haven't looked at my terrible written notes yet but I'm going to attempt a really bad synopsis of it.

Opinion is going to be swayed in my own notes but I'll try keeping it semi factual....

Oh and look this isn't a particular grudge I've personally got against any Corp even Soony ;-p xx and even then its not personal against mods and dev staff but the corps. ✌️

    Playtime.

    EA :

"We don't know users play time, consoles can be left on."

Surely they do? Even if its an average of active play time on a server for a particular mode.

Sony has stats Re PS Life?

    Healthy playtime

How much play time does it take to become an esport star?

    No data measured.

What are the stats for your top 100 players?

"we don't have any data on that"

"we do have data on the spending"

This is definitely a bad idea but I'm going to continue anyways... 🤷‍♂️

I should especially look at editing the notes but, 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

    -

    Behaviour psychologists

Both parties seem to deny they have them, whether that be to encourage or counter "bad play"

Do Sony have a team? I know they have Online behaviour support, but how far does that go?

Where do we get the info?

If we don't know as forumers, how's general public meant to know?

"Non of them definitely don't have monetization specialists"

So no sales staff concentrating on how best to sell the most profitable bits of their games? Let alone their top modern community aka influencer hits?

    Age profiles.

Epic: "No, that's not our problem. What's PEGI? That ball is in Sonys court"

Then they mention 'separate in game parental controls'

I don't know, never played it. Are they actually there?

    Epic

Seem embarrassed to deny kids play their games and the knowledge adults bypass it due to the pull.

"It's a 'living room game' to be enjoyed by all on the main TV"

"It's not our responsibility, but that of the platforms"

How does that work for the mobile version? Again I haven't a clue. Epic account via Google /apple account?

EA and the clued up lady compared to the idiots are starting to really show the gap now.

    My waffle for a while;

Personally I don't use them but, PSN online parental controls do seem to sux from witnessing the amount of threads on the old forum.

Its all fine and dandy letting parents/carers set their opinion on content, but it massively falls down with the whole 12 game parents get frustrated and skip 18 for all or give the codes for spending.

The old double line break really make this pop 😶

As well as the safe guard PSN sign in, EA also offers EA account log in.

Im assuming they mean the tick box t&cs pages, excuse my ignorance but something akin to Ubiplay?

Isn't that just an age drop down box thing?

Ie does as much use as a soon(now ish) prawn 18+?

    Epic.

"Unlike EA we don't want any of your data, we collect a minimal amount of our users and their age isn't measured"

    Q;

Isnt that breaking the law for your consumers re duty of care if you don't collect this certain data? "

    Epic

    " No/we dont"

Q; goes to mention Duty of Care UK white paper, but even mentions how he'll give it a pass and return to EA.

    EA lady shines again, but

"EA doesn't have social aspects, we're not into sharing social images vids etc"

    Ehhhy??

**honest question for ghosts possibly reading this**

Where is your view on collected personal data v privacy?

Dont we all click through the T&Cs that publishers collect our data anyway?

Has it changed much since Cookie Gate?

I did like the earlier committee lady, but this dude is fab, calling them out on their bullsmudge has me peeked.

Shame he gave it to the only person (EA lady) that seemed to have a clue,,,.

But started to unlock both barrels.

"this is for the house of commons, a perfect place to discuss such issues"

    He's got Epics number too.

Epic confirms they don't measure the likelihood of parental bypass.

But tbf do say they can provide it

    Thanks for the commentary Winnie.

Interesting notes. I assume Jim Sterling watched it too. He's usually all over this kinda thing. I can't really voice my opinion on here for obvious reasons but I did appreciate you sharing this with us on this Forum, not sure I would have known otherwise and also, many thanks for your continued efforts to keep this community alive with relevant gaming talk.

    @LordRoss

Credit where its due, I wouldn't have known it was on if I hadn't seen Groovy Mathew replying to someone about it.

Its a long watch, but worth it if you get the chance.

Re my Desperado fueled ramblings/"interesting notes" XD I imagine they make very little sense but hopefully get across the jist of the first half of the proceedings 🙄

    And cheers 😊😄

Epic questioned on Mental Health Screen time.

We have no data on who's spending at what age

There is no measure on healthy screen time, it varies.

Mentions of people seeking rehab for Fortnite issues get met with an Amy Winehouse.

Something on the lines of; "'addiction' masks the passion that our players have"

We provide tools 'a weekly parental report monitor' (not heard of it myself, since asked a Fortnite player who's never heard of it either, but confirms all the time stats (that Epic denied are collected at one point) are all in game with a breakdown between modes etc)

Then they seem to try selling their game again instead of answering average play times.

We're a free game, we're not an mmo that forces you to grind for things. There's no such thing as average play time as a game can last from 1 minute to 20.

"you can have an unhealthy level of engagement with exercise"

Epic refuses to accept the World Health Organisation statement regarding gaming issues.

They also deny they have a duty of care

"data is gathered for sales stats not unhealthy playtime"

They get told off for denying duty of care, and are compared to alcohol manufacturers and how they have to show duty of care to vulnerable consumers ; "that's fair, no we don't do that".

I watched about a third of this last night.

The ea woman looked like she was prepared and offered the kind of replies you would expect from someone in law. But was clearly lying and twisting the truth at some points.

Interviewer: Do you keep track of how long players play your game.

EA: We don't track that kind of information. We only track how many matches you may play on fifa for example.

Now ea know exactly how long a match lasts so it doesn't take a genius to work out the total play time.

Now the best bit from them was regarding battlefield. Where they said they tracked where players died alot. Then they would add a few trees to that spot to prevent people dying there as much. 😂

The epic guys were like some randoms pulled off of the street and paid a few bucks to sit there.

Interviewer: What would you define as a regular player?

    EPIC: That's hard to say.

Interviewer: Surly you must have some idea.

    After much mumbling and stalling.

EPIC: Someone that has played in the last 14 to 30 days.

Interviewer: How long would each gameplay session last?

Again a lot of mumbling and postponing.

EPIC: For me about 30 minutes but we have daily and weekly challenges that some people like to complete.

I think that's a long enough post for now.
