Renting a PlayStation Video

Restrictions and conditions for renting a video.


With PlayStation Video you have the choice to either buy1 or rent videos. Both options are generally available in High Definition or Standard Definition, plus 3D content is also sometimes available2.

When renting a video the following restrictions apply, in addition to any and all restrictions included in the Terms of Use:

  • When you decide to rent a video it is streamed or downloaded directly to your device.
  • The movie must be watched within 30 days of payment.
  • Once viewing has been started you have 24, 48 hours or 72 hours to finish watching it. This rental period can differ depending on the title. Please refer to the video detail page for each given title.
  • You can pause, stop and start your video as often as you like during the rental period (24, 48 or 72 hours, depending on the title) unless the 30 day limit is reached within that time.
  • You can start playback on one Sony device and later resume playback on a different Sony device – unless you download the rented video in which case it is bound to that device and you can no longer watch it (stream or download) on any other device. For more information on switching between devices please see the following FAQ below.
  • Once playback has started it cannot be rented on that account again until the end of the current rental period (24, 48 or 72 hours from start of playback. Rental periods depend on the title. Please refer to the video detail page for each given title).
  • If you rent an HD video and download it in SD you will only be able to watch it in SD.

The record of this rental is saved to your account and can be viewed under your Transaction History by visiting SEN Account Management on a PC.

Pausing and continuing playback on a different device

You can switch between any of your Sony devices to watch your movie within the rental period but only if your device supports My Videos (cloud library) feature and playback of the video format (some devices don't support HD/3D playback). To find out which devices support streaming or download of each format please see the table here. Please note that playback is restricted to one device at a time, so you cannot view your rented video from multiple devices at the same time.

However, if you download a rented video it is bound to that device and you can no longer watch it (stream or download) on any other device.  

The movies available on PlayStation Video are only available for viewing from your account on Sony devices – unless you are using your device browser to stream from PlayStation Store or using the PlayStation Video App on an Android device. In no circumstances can you move rented or purchased content to a DVD or external memory unit.

Please note:

  • Some devices do not support HD playback. To see which devices support HD please see the table above for more information.
  • In certain circumstances, a video may have to be removed from PlayStation Video. In these circumstances, videos that you have purchased may become unavailable to download and/or stream. This will not affect purchased or rented videos that you have already downloaded. As a result, wherever possible, you should download purchased and rented videos immediately after purchase to all compatible devices on which you would like to have a copy.
