SEN sub account parental controls

This article explains PlayStation Network account parental controls, which operate independently from console parental controls and CB ratings.

Master accounts have the option of creating up to 6 associated sub accounts for users under the age of 18. The master account may restrict their associated sub accounts' access to many PlayStation Network and console features. This means that there are two different sorts of parental controls that we recommend you set up - account parental controls and console parental controls.

Age restricted content can only be purchased if PlayStation Store has been accessed through a PlayStation Network account of the appropriate age. Age restricted content may only be viewed on the PlayStation system if the local user being used to access the content is the appropriate age and any console settings and parental controls allow it. You can place restrictions on your PlayStation systems to further limit a sub account holder’s access to age-restricted content downloaded to the PlayStation system or on game and video discs - click here to find out more about age ratings and console parental controls.

As the controls covered in this article are on the account, not the PlayStation system, once they have been set, the changes automatically sync when the sub account holder accesses PlayStation Network on any PlayStation system. The sub account holder cannot change parental controls, so after you have set them up they will only be changed if you choose to change them from your own master account.

Please see below for more information about the PlayStation Network features that your sub account can use and the available parental controls or skip to instructions on setting up parental controls on your associated sub account. Make sure that you set up parental controls on your PlayStation Network account and on all of your PlayStation systems to ensure you have as much control as possible of the content your children can access.

Spending Limit

Sub accounts may spend funds from the master account wallet. Therefore, we recommend that you make sure spending limits are placed on any sub accounts associated with your master account.

  • The spending limit is set to $0.00 when the sub account is created.
  • You can choose to keep the limit at $0.00 or increase it to $10.00, $25.00, $50.00, $150.00, $200.00, $300.00 or unlimited.
  • Any unspent balance in the monthly spending limit does not roll over to the next month.
  • Sub account spending will never debit the credit or debit card you have saved on your account.
  • As the master account holder, you will receive email notifications of all transactions that take place on your associated sub accounts and you can view the sub account transaction history at any time.

Chat/Messages

You can stop your associated sub accounts from being able to use the live voice, video and chat functions and from sending and receiving messages including free text, images, screen capture or video sent/received via PlayStation 4 system or PlayStation App.

You can stop your associated sub accounts from using live voice chat functions but you cannot block messages including free text, images, screen capture or video sent/received on their PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita systems. Messages can be blocked from being received by the sub account in sub account settings by going to [PlayStation Network/Account Management] > [Privacy Settings] > [Messages] and selecting [No one] when asked who you would like to receive messages from. Note that sub account holders may change this setting themselves.

  • Chat/message is blocked when the sub account is created.
  • Restricting chat may affect the user’s ability to play some games online - even if the sub account holder is of the correct age to play the game.
  • If you choose to allow Chat/message your child can restrict who can send messages to them using Privacy Settings and may block users they no longer want to receive messages from. Your child cannot use Privacy settings to override Chat/message parental controls.
  • This setting does not stop your child from receiving or sending messages containing predetermined text that cannot be edited by players. It is not possible for these messages to contain inappropriate content.
  • This setting does not always stop your child seeing other players' character names, clan names, designs etc. when they play online, provided the content follows certain guidelines. If this content is not blocked, it is because the game publisher filters the content.
  • This setting does not stop your child using communication services via the PlayStation system internet browser that bypass PlayStation Network. To prevent your child using the internet browser you need to use the console controls.

User-Generated Media

Sub account and master account users can post their own content in some PlayStation Network environments so other players in the same environment can see it.

  • Although this content is monitored and may be reported and, in some cases removed, we are not responsible for user generated content.
  • Restricting User-Generated Media may affect the user’s ability to play some games online - even if the sub account holder is of the correct age to play the game.
  • All content, including content uploaded by sub account users, may be screen captured by any user that can view it.
  • This setting does not stop your child from receiving or sending messages (including messages with attachments). To block messages see Chat/Messages, above.
  • This setting does not always stop your child seeing other players' character names, clan names, designs etc. when they play online, provided the content follows certain guidelines.
  • This setting does not stop your child using communication services via the PlayStation system internet browser that bypass PlayStation Network. To prevent your child using the internet browser you need to use the console controls.

Web filtering (PlayStation 4 only)

You can purchase an automatically renewing subscription to Trend Micro Kids Safety web filtering software for your PlayStation 4 to make sure your children do not see inappropriate or harmful material via the web browser. You can also sign up for an automatically renewing subscription to Trend Micro Web Security to help you avoid phishing and scam sites.

To sign up and enable web filtering:

  1. Go to [PlayStation Store] on your PlayStation 4 and search for 'Trend Micro'.
  2. Select the subscription you would like to sign up for and continue to check out. If you would like both Kids Safety and Web Security you can sign up for a bundled subscription by selecting Trend Micro for PlayStation 4.
  3. We will usually switch on Automatic Wallet Funding when you sign up for a subscription service (click here to find out how to make sure it is switched on). This means that if your wallet does not have enough funds the credit or debit card linked to your account will be debited to top up your wallet for subscription renewals.
  4. Enable the security software by opening the PlayStation 4 web browser.
  5. Select [OPTIONS] > [Settings] > [Web Filter] > [Trend Micro for PlayStation 4 Settings] > Enter system passcode. Only people with the passcode may switch web filtering on and off.
  6. Press (X button) to place a tick next to the filter you want to enable and press (Circle button) to exit.
  7. Web filtering is now active.

'Live from PlayStation'

Users can post their own video content on PlayStation Network so it appears on other users’ ‘Live from PlayStation’ feeds on their PlayStation 4 and on PlayStation App for Android™ and iOS.

  • The Live from PlayStation app can only be launched by a local user linked to a master account. It cannot be launched by local user accounts associated with a sub account.
  • Parents cannot override the restrictions on sub accounts launching the app.
  • Although this content is monitored and may be reported and, in some cases removed, we are not responsible for this content. We recommend that you stop users from signing in on another user account by placing a PIN code on each account and keeping it secret. Each user must go to [Settings] > [Users] > [Login Settings] > [Passcode Management] > [Change Passcode] > [Enter the current passcode] > [Change passcode] to do this.

'What's New' (PlayStation 4 only)

'What's New' provides a live feed of PlayStation news including PlayStation Network users' activity.

  • Sub accounts do not see other PlayStation Network users' activity, they will only see their own activity and age-appropriate PlayStation Store information. Parents cannot override this restriction.
  • Sub account activity cannot be seen on other users' feeds. Parents cannot override this restriction.
  • We recommend that you stop users from signing in on another local user account by placing a PIN code on each local user account. Each user must go to [Settings] > [Users] > [Login Settings] > [Passcode Management] > [Change Passcode] > [Enter the current passcode] > [Change passcode].
