How to create and join a party on PS4 consoles

Joining a party on PlayStation®4 consoles allows you to communicate with group members via voice chat and text messages.

How to create a group on PS4™ consoles 

Want a space where you can message multiple players? Simply create a group and invite others to chat.

  1. From the home screen, press the up button on your controller to access the function screen.
  2. Select Messages from the function screen.
  3. Select Create Message.
  4. Select group members.
  5. Enter a message, and then select Send.

How to start a party on PS4 consoles to voice chat with players

Have real-time conversations with players by voice chatting in a party. You can start or join the following types of parties:

A party that friends of the owner can freely join. Friends of party members can also join the party.

If you start an open party, you're the owner. As the owner, you can change the party name, invite players, and set a party limit. If you turn on Require Request to Join, players need to request an invite to join the party.

A party that only selected players can join. You can start a party with a new group of players or an existing one.

  1. From the home screen, press the up button on your controller to access the function screen.
  2. Select Party > Start Party.
  3. Select either Open Party or Closed Party.
    Follow the on-screen instructions.
    When you finish your selection, the party starts. 
  • Once a new group has been created it is saved, even after your game session ends. Start a new party with the same members by selecting your previously created group. 
  • You can customize the Quick Menu to include the Party shortcut.

How to join an existing party on PS4 consoles

  1. From the home screen, press the up button on your controller to access the function screen.
  2. Select Party.
  3. From the list, select the party you want to join.
  • If you receive an invite from a friend, press the PS button on your DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller to join their party. To view recent invites, select Notifications from the function screen.

How to remove a player from a group on PS4 consoles

If you created the group, you can remove players. 

  1. Highlight a player in the Players tab, and then press the OPTIONS button.
  2. Select Kick Out from Group.

How to mute your microphone in PS4 voice chat

  1. While you’re in a party, press options on your controller to enter the Quick Menu.
  2. Select Mute Microphone.

What are the PS4 party settings?

To reach the party settings select Party from the function menu. Party settings are at the top of the screen.
