Star Wars The Force Unleashed is arguably the biggest Star Wars event since the arrival of Darth Vader in Revenge of The Sith, back in 2005. LucasArts’, building brilliantly on the mystery of the dark side established in each of the six films, delivers a knockout storyline worthy of a film itself. And by the end of this epic space tale, the events within Force Unleashed will alter the way you view the original trilogy forever.
A New Chapter
Following on from Episode III - Revenge Of The Sith the story deals with the events leading to the original film, Episode IV - A New Hope. Taking on the role of Vader’s Secret Apprentice - or Starkiller, as he’s referred to in the game - you are tasked with hunting down and eradicating rogue Jedi masters in hiding throughout the galaxy.
To succeed in your mission you must operate outside the parameters of the Emperor’s rule, executing everyone in your path and leaving no trace of your existence. You’re doing so to keep the Emperor from knowing of yours and Vader’s ultimate goal: to crush him and rule the galaxy together.
Hurtling Wookie warriors into the air or through huge wooden Wookie temples that splinter, shatter and explode, the game opens with an awe-inspiring taster of just what to expect once you take on the role of Starkiller in the subsequent missions.
Naturally, you’re not going to be as powerful as Vader in the ways of the Force right from the outset. It’s up to you to perfect those abilities over time by mastering the lightsaber, defeating enemies with style and amassing skill points that can then be used to unlock devastating killer combos, moves and upgrades.
Depending on how you approach The Force Unleashed, you can focus on certain attributes you want to upgrade before moving other, less important attributes that can be upgraded. This allows you maximise certain skills quickly, turning you into a formidable force in battle.
There are four main Force powers you have at your disposal: Force Grip, Lightening, Force Push and Force Repulse. Combining these with lightsaber attacks creates enormously stylish and satisfying takedowns that allow you to gain experience points much faster. Plus, injecting pizzazz into a fight with an army of Stormtroopers, AT-AT walkers and angry Wookies makes for some great entertainment!
Back For More
Star Wars fans are treated to classic character appearances including Obi-Wan Kenobi, R2 D2, Princes Leia and even the menacing double-sided lightsaber wielding Sith, Darth Maul, who manifests as a hologram controlled by your sidekick droid, Proxy. That moment, and the fight that follows is one of the game’s many highlights.
To keep you coming back for more, LucasArts has also pencilled in a number of downloadable packs which are set to arrive on PlayStation Store. The first of these will add a number of classic characters and costumes to the fold.
This allows you to play through the single player campaign on the PlayStation3 as Luke Skywalker. Other characters planned for the pack also include Jedi master, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Following on from this will be a second download pack featuring an entirely new level on the planet Coruscant that takes place in a Jedi Temple.
These packs ultimately add great replay value for you to hone and upgrade your Force skills whilst at the same time allowing Star Wars fans the world over to savour the prospect of controlling a fully Force equipped Luke Skywalker.
