    The Wild West

Welcome to America, 1911. The Wild West is dying and changes are afoot in Red Dead Redemption, Rockstar Games' breathtaking open world opus. You play as John Marston, a man forced to pick up his guns again and hunt down the gang of criminals he once called friends when federal agents threaten his family.

Taking place at the end of a long forgotten era, Red Dead Redemption throws you into an epic fight for survival across the sprawling expanses of the American West and Mexico as John Marston struggles to bury his bloodstained past, one man at a time.

It's time to saddle up for one of the most engrossing adventures ever released on PlayStation 3.

New town, more missions only on PS3

If you want to gain a head start in the world of Red Dead Redemption, then look out for the limited edition version of the game which features a fantastic range of exclusive material including the Deadly Assassin Outfit, which makes your Dead Eye regenerate at twice the speed.

You also get the War Horse, the strongest, fastest horse in the world of Red Dead Redemption. Other great extras include Golden Guns, which allow you to gain more fame for each kill you make in the game. The more fame you gain, the more side mission become available to you.

However, PlayStation 3 fans are in for a real treat because both the standard and the limited edition versions of the game feature exclusive PS3 content including a brand new town that features extra missions for you to take on.

    Saddle up, cowboy

Red Dead Redemption features a vast array of missions for you to tackle ranging from simple tasks such as herding cattle to hunting down wanted criminals with bounties on their head. The more missions you complete, the more fame, honour and currency you gain. However, should you choose to disobey the law and slay or rob innocent bystanders in the huge world, you'll find yourself a wanted man with posses of lawmen hot on your heels.

There are also plenty of side missions including helping people along your journey by rescuing their stolen horses, or tracking down their missing children. Cash you earn in Red Dead Redemption can be used to buy everything from guns to ammo, medicine and food. Aside from earning money by completing certain missions in the game, you can also hunt the wildlife that roams the huge map. Animals range from coyotes to wolves and even much larger and dangerous creatures such as bears, with each one offering its very own set of rewards if you manage to catch and kill it.

With such an enormous map to explore, it can take time getting to and from locations which is why Rockstar has included the ability to set up a campsite anywhere you want, which allows you to place a location marker on your map and jump to it via a quick loading screen. There are also trains and carriages that can help you get around should you wish to use them.

Along the way you'll wield an arsenal of weaponry including pistols, dynamite, Molotov cocktails, rifles, a lasso and even a Gatling gun when battling large numbers of enemies in some of the game's tougher missions. When you're not capturing crooks or completing story missions, you can also drop into any of the saloons on the map and play cards, throw horseshoes, have a beer or take part in a showdown which requires you to use the Dead Eye targeting mechanic, an ability that allows you to slow down time for precision shooting.

    Form a posse

Red Dead Redemption features both multiplayer and co-operative modes for up to 16 players including shoot-outs and capture the flag style missions. However, one of the most intriguing and engrossing aspects of Red Dead Redemption is the Free Roam mode, which lets you and other players on PlayStation Network explore the entirety of the single player map.

Here you can choose to form posses and take part in shoot-outs and raids on hideouts or forts working together as a team. Or, if you want, you can simply explore the huge map hunting animals. By completing the missions highlighted on the map in Free Roam mode you gain experience points and can level up to unlock additional characters, modes and horses.

With so much to do in the single player campaign, and the brilliant range of multiplayer modes available to you, Red Dead Redemption is an experience on PlayStation 3 that you'll find hard to put down.
