    Enter the darkness

In Dante's Inferno you play as Dante, a warrior from the Third Crusade, searching for your one true love, Beatrice, and freeing her soul from the clutches of Lucifer. It's not going to be easy, as Lucifer plans to wed her in order to break free from Hell and overthrow God from his throne in Heaven, so you will have to battle through the nine circles of Hell facing all kinds of horrors in order to finally reach him.

Not only will you have to battle the Prince of Darkness' minions, you will also have to face your own demons, the sins of your family and the atrocities you committed in war as you progress through the circles, making each level more challenging than the next. Based on the poem The Divine Comedy written in the 13th century by poet Dante Alighieri, Dante's Inferno is a haunting and epic journey into the darkest recesses of the netherworld.

    Confront the monsters

While Dante and Beatrice are the central characters in the game, you will come face to face with a number of faces, all of which feature in the original poem. Death provides your giant scythe and Lucifer appears throughout the game in many forms, before ultimately manifesting in the final level as an enormous boss determined to stop you from completing your quest.

Other memorable creatures inspired by the poem include Cerberus, a three-headed hellhound who guards Gluttony, the third circle of hell, Charon the ferryman, Cleopatra and King Minos, the Judge of The Damned who you must defeat in Limbo before you can continue your journey into the dark world that lies ahead.

Each of these monsters has been taken inspired by the poem and brought to life on PlayStation 3 by acclaimed artist, Wayne Barlowe, who created a number of the creatures for the 2008 film Hellboy II: The Golden Army.

    The battle for redemption

The game begins with a tutorial during the Third Crusades before thrusting you into a relentless battle with Death himself, who seeks to punish your eternally for all the sins you have committed during the wars. Once you have defeated him, you are awarded his scythe, which then becomes your weapon for the duration of the game. Combat is mapped to the action, L1, L2, R1 and R2 buttons respectively. Attacks include light, heavy and ranged while using the Circle button hurls beams of holy light from a cross given to you by Beatrice at the outset of the game.

Death's scythe is perfect for pummelling waves of enemies with a range of punishing attacks and Beatrice's cross is ideal for keeping demons at bay should you be low on health, or if you are being attacked from the air by winged creatures. Defeating enemies produces souls, all of which act as currency that can be used on a range of upgrades that unlock new moves, combos and abilities for your weaponry. Souls can also be gathered from the vast amount of holy water fonts located throughout each of the game's huge levels.

During your journey you encounter a huge number of enemies ranging from zombies to grotesque monsters and huge beasts that can be weakened before being ridden. Once you have control of them, you can then steer the hulking fiends into crowds of Hell's armies and smash, stomp or even breathe fire on them. With a robust combat system, plenty of upgrades and giant beasts to overpower, you're journey through the nine circles of Hell is guaranteed to be action-packed.

    The Gates of Hell

When you finish the single player campaign developer Visceral tasks you with completing a series of arena challenges in an unlockable mode entitled The Gates of Hell. Here, the objective is to take down waves of enemies within a set time limit with bonuses awarded in each of the rounds for not taking any damage.

Another great mode, due for release in April 2010, is the Trials of St. Lucia, a downloadable expansion pack that allows you to take part in multiplayer and co-operative play challenges.

In it, you will be able to customise every aspect of the battle including the types of enemies you wish to fight as either Dante, or the bonus character included in the pack, St. Lucia. Start your quest for redemption on PlayStation 3 now!
