PlayStation 3 system cannot read the disc

Find out what to do if your PlayStation 3 system is not reading or recognising a game or movie disc.

  1. Ensure that the latest system software update is installed on your PlayStation 3 system.
  • To check the system software, access the XMB Menu and choose System Settings > [System Information].
  • Check out the PlayStation 3 System Software page and update to the latest version of the system software.

  1. Check the disc for scratches and dirt.
  • Clean a scratched or dirty disc using a lint-free cleaning cloth made specifically for cleaning CDs or DVDs. These cloths are sold at computer software stores.
  • Clean the disc by wiping from the innermost circle out towards the edge in a straight line.
  • Using other materials such as a paper towel or T-shirt may scratch the disc and cause it not to function properly.

  1. Check that the disc is compatible with your PlayStation 3 system.

  1. Does the issue affect multiple discs?
  • Try playing different CDs, DVDs and games on the PlayStation 3 system to find out if the problem occurs with other discs.
  • If the problem only occurs with one disc, the disc is damaged.
  • If the problem occurs with all discs, there may be a fault with your PlayStation 3 system.
  1. Try the disc in another PlayStation 3 system.
  • Try playing the disc on a different PlayStation 3 system (or a PlayStation 2 system, PS one system or standalone CD/DVD player, if applicable) to find out if the problem occurs on another system.
