PlayStation Store Pre-Orders

This article explains PlayStation Store pre-orders, including how to cancel them and when your wallet will be charged.

What are pre-orders?

You can pre-order some products on PlayStation Store (PS Store) before their release date. That way, you can usually download them in advance1 so they're ready for you to play as soon as they come out.

To place your pre-order add the product to your cart and check out in the same way that you would buy any other product in PS Store.

1 Or use auto-download setting to allow your pre-order purchases to download to your console automatically as soon as they become available (usually 2 days prior to release).

When will I be charged?

In most instances you pay for your pre-order when you place it and this is made clear during checkout. For a few products (mostly PlayStation VR titles) we will not debit your wallet until a few days before release. This will also be made clear at checkout.  In addition, we will email you once you checkout to confirm the details of your pre-order and whether we have taken payment immediately or will debit your wallet nearer the release date.

Make sure you know when you will be charged by reading all of the messages during check out and any emails we send to you. Update your sign-in ID if we don’t have your current email address.

Immediate payment

Most pre-orders are paid for straight away. In these instances you will see a message under the heading ‘Immediate Payment’. Your wallet will be debited as soon as you have completed check out and usually you will be able to download the title prior to release so that you can play your purchase on release.

Pay later

If you do not see the ‘Immediate Payment’ message this means that you will pay later. Your wallet will usually be debited two days before the expected release date although this can vary.

To ensure you get your content as soon as possible, make sure your wallet can be debited on the payment date. You can do this by using any accepted payment method to top up your wallet.

You can also enable ‘Automatically Add Funds to Renew Subscriptions or Pay for Pre-ordered Content’ (auto-funding). Auto-funding uses your default payment method to top up if your wallet does not have enough funds on the payment date.

If you do not have enough funds in your wallet and do not have auto-funding switched on (together with a valid, registered payment method) we will email you to remind you that you need to top-up to complete your pre-order. If you choose not to top-up, we won’t be able to take payment and your pre-order will fail.

When will I get my pre-order?

Your pre-ordered content will usually be available for download 2 days before release. This is called pre-load. Note: pre-load content is locked, so you can’t play it early!

You can configure your console to pre-load your pre-orders automatically as soon as they are available.

If you prefer not to do that, your pre-order purchases will usually appear in your Library/Download List up to two days before release, so you can download it ahead of time and get playing straight away on the release date. If your content was not available to download ahead of release check your Library/Download List on the day of release to start downloading it.

Go to your Download List/Library to download your new content or set up automatic download on your PS4 or PS3 system.

How do I cancel a pre-order?

How to cancel depends on whether you paid immediately when you placed your pre-order or if you placed a “pay later” pre-order.

If you have started to download the main part of your order you cannot cancel it. Please note that download may happen automatically if you have enabled Automatic Download in your system settings.

After payment (immediate payment)

How long you have to cancel (cooling off period) depends on when you paid:

  • More than 14 days before main product release date

You can cancel up to the release date if you have not started to download2 the main part of the pre-order (or the pre-load file).

  • 14 days or less before main product release date

You can cancel up to 14 days after placing the pre-order if you have not started to download2 the main part of the pre-order (or the pre-load file).

If you have not started to download the main product and your pre-order included immediately accessible extra content, this extra content will stop working if you cancel your pre-order and you will receive a refund to your wallet. If no additional content was included you will receive a refund to the original payment method where possible3.

Contact us to cancel your pre-order if you have paid.

Before payment (pay later)

You can cancel your pre-order via Account Management any time before payment is taken from your wallet. You will usually be charged two days before the expected release date although this can vary.

We will send you an email on the day we take payment to let you know that your wallet has been debited. If you have not been charged, you can cancel your pre-order by going to Transaction History on any devices activated on your account:

  1. Go to your Transaction History - find out how to check your PlayStation Store transactions.
  2. Find the pre-order that you want to cancel - the purchase date will be the date that you placed the pre-order.
  3. If it is still before the release date there will be an option to cancel the pre-order.

After payment (pay later)

You can cancel your pre-order up to 14 days after your wallet was debited provided you have not started to download2 the main part of the pre-order.

Contact us to cancel your pre-order if you have paid.

2 This applies to auto-download as well as if you download from your download list.

3 We are unable to do this for certain payment methods. In those cases, we’ll refund to your wallet.
